ctfmon.......what is this?

What is this program that is always running in the background? Is it Office XP related? Thanks for your help.

Yes it's to do with OfficeXP.

You can remove ctfmon.exe using Add or Remove Features on the CD. Select Office Shared Features then Alternative User Input. Left click on it and select Not Available.

You can also start menu/run and type MSCONFIG and select the Startup tab, uncheck the box next to ctfmon.exe.
