The CSB or center support bearing, aka driveshaft support bearing on my car appeared to be going out. It's sandwiched between the exhaust, a heat shield, and the underside of my car, so its not an easy item to check. I'm having vibrations under acceleration and figured the rest of the car had been neglected by the previous owner, so at 143k miles, its probably time to change this out. Before tackling this job, I ordered a replacement from Advance auto, specifically one for an XI car, and the photo looked exactly like what I have. Ordered it last Friday for pickup Saturday at noon.
Saturday morning rolls around. I have my jetski trailer in the garage for another project, so I pulled the car half in/half out of the garage and put all 4 corners up on jack stands. Pulled the exhaust off, breaking 3 of the 4 studs in the process, even with using heat and pb blaster, and after about 90 minutes and a trip to get an E TORX socket for the rear diff, I got everything apart and sure enough, my bearing was very loose and the rubber webbing was all cracked and weak. Got it all apart and went to pick up my new CSB.
SOB.. its not the right part. The part on the box and the part in the box look nothing alike, and the part in the box has the correct part number on it, but its for a regular RWD bmw, not an XI (AWD) like I have. I'm up shit creek without a paddle as no stores carry it, and I cant close my garage, so I put the bearing back on the driveshaft, pressed the driveshafts together, slid the bearing holder over the bearing, and put it all back together loosely, minus the heat shield. I had picked up new bolts/studs for the exhaust already so I put those in to hold everything together and was able to back the car out of the garage and pull it up near my 3rd bay. Today my correct part from FCPEURO should be here and I'll put it in tonight hopefully.
