So i live in a apartment style dorm, the other day I attempted to play CS:S on my desktop. I was able to pop up a server list but it was really short and seemed like it just stopped showing servers. On top of that I was unable to connect to any of the servers even though the latency was under 100. A weird thing i noticed is that when i tried to connect to the server the ping would be around 50 but then all of a sudden jump to 2000 and lag out before i could even connect.

I suspect it has to do something with the router or network system that the dorm uses.

Yup. Wireless? What's the Policy regarding Network Activity? You'll probably have to ask someone to open some thingies for you.

Chances are you don't have all the ports open you need to, and you're only seeing the ones that you can connect to with your current settings.

yeah dorm internet is getting worse and worse as universities try to traffic shape their way out of buying more bandwidth. I couldn't play CS:S well when I lived in the dorms, once I moved off campus and got a standard connection I was happy once again.

Latency and Bandwidth are two different things. Counterstrike does require much bandwidth to have good gameplay, but high latency will get you killed. I suspect the OP is right about the source of the problem. I agree that shaping traffic can be problematic, but those problems will usually come in the form of undulating download speeds, where the speed will increase and decrease based on server demand. But who knows, university internet usually sucks all the way around. At least it does where I go to school. I guess it could be all of the above.

The things is that I can play xbox live ex. MW2 and Halo 3 with no lag at all. I am not connected through wireless either. I can not open up ports either since I do not have access to the router.

Canadian schools don't traffic shape. DC++ works great, better than torrents and my school had wifi since early 2000.
