CS: Source ping appears normal in Steam Favorites...

I am on my college connection. To chicago I have a meg down and five megs up (interesting, eh?). I was wondering what I can do to make my ping not so sh!tty.

180 is not only not sky high, it's ok. Nothing wrong with a ping under 200.

i'm being told my ping of 130 in cod2 is too high, and it shows because i'm getting killed all the time when i shouldn't be.

thats pretty high. 30-50 was what i got for quite a while and acceptable. sbc.

recently its dropped to 10-20ping. quite impressive.

Don't listen to other people. I mean, I get a 40 ping in one server I'm in, but only a handful give me under 100. It's all about location and your speed of connection. If you live in a low server population area like me, you are lucky to get a ping under 100.

well its not just that though. i'mpretty sure i get decent pings from most west coast locations. the server doesn't have to be in your town or in state. it might be the isp network.

100-200 is not "normal" by any means.

You will see a HUGE difference when playing with 20-50 ping then playing with 100-200 ping, some games show it more obvious than others, I tend to notice it most when playing CS and CS:S.

Go to your console and type:

net_graph 3

Then, look at your choke and see what it is. Optimally, it should be 0. Anything less than 5-10 is OK though.

If you're getting choke, try adjusting the following in the console:

rate 20000
cl_cmdrate 50
cl_updaterate 50

That should help you. Let me know if those help.
