XP2700+
Gainward GF6800 Ultra
1 gig pc3200 drr ram
Asus A78N deluxe motherboard
Nvidia drivers 71.40

I'm having trouble with my FPS in cs source. I have all the detail on low...vsync disabled and no AA

I have my fps_max set to 100 and it does stay at 100 in some areas but many areas eg. office when you're outside my fps will drop to as low as 30 fps...

No programs running in background as i've just done a format so only cs source running...

I tried the stress test also and couldn't get above 83 in 1024 resolution...I even formatted my hard drive and reinstalled everything and can now get 90 in the test...

any ideas if this is what I should be getting as i've spoken to others who get much better performance with a slower card (6800GT) but 2800 64 cpu...

well on office i also drop to like 45-50fps and thats with a A64 3200, this is on a server with 40 people and details at max with 2xaa and 8xaf
im pretty sure its not the graphics card that responsible, theres just something about that part of the map that makes it very cpu limited. CS:S isnt exactly top notch in terms of graphics. its going to be mainly cpu limited, and that part outside with the tree always dips me into red fps region

thats why people with a slowr card and better cpu are doing better, as the game is cpu limited.

enabled...i will try disabling when i get home cheers...

i get 10900 in 3dmark as well...

AGP 8x enabled...

i tried the stress test on the lowest horrible resolution with all details turned down and 93 was the max i could get...

i'm thinking of upgrading to an athlon 64 bit but don't want to if i will see no performance increase in the games that i play...

You are right on the money when you look at this chart:
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuch...howdoc.aspx?i=2249&p=9

If you expect over 100 FPS, you are likely not going to want to push the resolution over 1280x1024 even with a faster CPU.

If you upgrade to an A64 you will see dramatic performance increase in all games. Especially considering how CPU limited you are now with such a powerful video card. Hell, when I went to a A64 with just a 9800 I saw big increases in frame rate with my games.

I however rather have a balance of fast frame rates with high quality settings at high res.
