I have an extra machine lying around. It's nothing fancy, or even great but it's an extra machine.
celeron366
192MB PC100 (running at 66MHz)
abit be6 mobo
win2kpro
256K DSL Connection

Would it be feasable to run a CS server from it?
Any idea where I can find info on running a CS server and the resources needed?

thx

not to steal your thread, but also what about a UT server? i was thinking about hosting some games, but i don't know if i could handle it on this box:
PIII 500E
96mb
DSL topped at 150kb/s
win98SE

i found a cs server info page and it posted a lot of useful information.
the one thing i'm still interested in knowing is what is the loweset that i can set sv_maxrate to so that it is still nicely playable.
and also, does 3000=3000bps?
thx

150kbps will serve like 4-5 people, and the 256 maybe 7.

Just figure around 40k per connection and divide into your bandwidth.

I've talked to my admin friend and the hard drive speeds are the most important thing(and memory) and of course your net connection... Also he says Linux is a lot more stable and faster than any Windows.

56K should do fine for online gaming. pings can get as low as 100 to local servers.
generally most are in the 150+ range.

HD speed? w/ 192 megs i figure i won't run into swap issue w/ a CS server. i hope to run an 8-10 player server. just want to know how effective a 256K dsl line would be given a rate of let's say 3500 per player?
