CS:S Lag.

Its driving me nuts. Its REALLY jumpy. Like, all the sudden, everyone will stop, the screen vibrates a little, then i either die, or it shows every body on the floor re-dying (while i was gone) and it shows me weapons on the left hand side (like when you buy them).

Its killed me so many times. I dont understand, the server is near me and everyones pings were low, so it shouldnt happen. It happens alot sometimes, to the point where i cant play, but usually its not that bad (yet still damn irritating).

Whats going on? How can i fix it?

Btw, anyone know of any console command optimizations i should do for this game? Thanks

How many choke packet are you getting.

Type Net_graph 3 in console to view this.

I get this a lot right at the start of the round on tons of servers. Hardly ever happens to me otherwise.

My theory is lots of stupid admins out there are turning on 100tic even though they don't have a pipe fast enough to support it.

Ok, for the few minutes i played (impossible to play cause of lag), i got mostley 3, dropped as low as 0, and as high as 5. FPS didnt drop below 50 once, and stays @ around 70+.

i am having the same problem as you, i tried deleting and reinstalling the game, reinstalled chipset drivers and graphic drivers and still no go. one day it just stopped letting me connect to the master server to get games and that is when the lag started happening. i am on a campus lan right now and i think the game is getting firewalled but i have no way of telling until i go home next. i hope it is just that though.

More than likely you are right. Alot of schools are starting to firewall games.

Do you have zonealarm installed? I know a previous version was the source of my problems with CS:S. (No pun intended) Going to Kerio solved most of those serious lag issues.

Not to hijack, but you mean colleges? College networks are starting to firewall games? WTF?

that rig shouldnt be giving you anywhere near the problems your describing, my modestish setup below runs CS:S pretty much fine on fairly high settings, most of the servers i visit are ok, some maps can get a little spasticky at points (Chateau cellar with lots of nades going off being notorious for most people..lol).

I'd suggest turn of PC based firewalls and anti-virus stuff, just use the hardware one in your router.....(assuming you have a router with hardware firewal...lol...but make sure the right ports are open). Otherwise i dunno what to say, do other games suffer or just CS:S? if just CS:S, try launching a game on your own puter as the server, dont allow others to join, setup different maps with differing amounts of bots and see how that pans out.....if its still doing it then your install is cocked up....reinstall, if from a disc make sure there are not any stupidly large scratches obscuring parts of it...

yeah, and actually it is not new, i remember my freshman year we couldnt play any games really, expeccially not cs, although we could play on the LAN which was very nice. It is not really a new thing, i guess it hogs bandwidth and schools dont like that, they would rather us drink our selves stupid every night :p

i know that i tried doing this and found that having my own server led to no problems at all and it ran fine.

ask the network admin at your school. no one i know with private connection has a problem like that..and it doesn't seem to be a software firewall type thing. those usuallly just block u completely ifu setit up wrong

well i just reinstalled the ide drivers and everything still works fine, but i do remember having a warning in device manager about a pci to usb device not having drivers. i installed the drivers and thought nothing of it, from the post above, i almost think it has to do with a pci device maybe not being setup correctly or having driver. sorry for the confusion
