CS 1.6 and Steam

I have had steam for a couple of days now. I think that it is really cool that you don't have to have cs installed (origional half life mod or cs retail cd) to run 1.6, just install steam and put your cd key in. Well I don't know what I did but I want to delete my steam account with my current email address, so that I can completely restart from scratch. How do I do that? Also when I first installed steam when I had cs installed, it said since I had the half life platinum pack that I got a free subscription, free subscripton to what? Are we going to start and have to pay to play cs on the net? Thanks

I think you are catching on....

The $30 my wife spent for Half Life in Christmas of '98 has bought countless hours of gaming enjoyment for nearly 5 years
An excellent investment.
Over that course of time there have been numerous free updates for CS as well as quite a few other mods.

Yes, steam will ultimately become the vehicle by which they will seek to charge us for playing 'their' game online, either by a large one-time fee or a monthly amount. Steam is not yet mandatory to play the half life mods online... THESE are the good old days.

Regarding updating your steam account, I believe there may be an option under "settings" in which you can change your account. Failing that, you may have to uninstall steam in the control panel and then reinstall it (There is no uninstall routine bundled with that software).

As someone who has become intimately familiar with half life/cs/won over the past five years by daily playing and running a dedicated server, I see nothing cool or convenient in running steam. I personally know of a number of avid players who will be knocked off the playing field either because their computers won't handle steam or they are not sophisticated enough to get it working. I am certain that there will be thousands facing that predicament worldwide.

And here's one right here. :disgust: I have managed to get Steam/1.6 working, I'm thoroughly disgusted with the startup/load times(XP2600+), the lag(DSL 768/384), and the endless number of hacks that seems to have come out of the woodwork; shield-hacks are by far the worst. :| There are quite a few people who are hanging it up and moving on to other games and I'm right there with 'em.

Remember that 1.6 is not actually out yet. When it goes final in 1 or 2 weeks time, the shield thing and other things could very well be fixed.

As for the original topic, I'd like to know too. Just reinstall won't work because when you install it, you're starting a new account with your cd key meaning that no other accounts can use it. You must remove that account from their servers before creating another one with the same CD key.

I've reinstalled it 2 or 3 times already, but have used the same email address.

If what you say is true, then steam subscribers will not be able to change ISPs (email address) without buying a new game (CD key).
I don't believe that, but wouldn't that be a headache!

My conclusion of Steam is that right now it is broken! I've been trying to setup and account for over a week now and I keep getting error messages. I even tried downloading the 723MB version which includes Steam/Final and CS 1.6. That too has not done a thing to help me get logged in.

You can check out SteamPowered.com and you will see what a mess it is overthere.

My feeling is that Valve will not have Steam fully fuctional until HL2 and CS:CZ are ready to be purchased via Steam later this month. I sure only then when both games are ready they will have steam fully functional, because right now Steam has some major obvious problems and no one from Steam/Valve has posted any solutions to the problem(s), which many people are having with Steam.

I agree. I am somewhat of a counter strike guru. Had steam working a few months ago to try 1.6 when it was first minimally available. It seems to work much worse now. Despite the fact that I have a new 3GHz+ comp with a 1GHz FSB.

CS 1.6 works everytime, just not any of the other mods.

That's what I really honestly meant.

I'm glad it works good for you....

Does that mean you'll be glad to fork over your credit card when they start charging a monthly fee?

It works great for me beyond the Steam installation.

I definately won't pay that. I bought Half-Life and I expect to be able to play it for free beyond that first payment since that was the agreement when I purchased it.

If they charge a fee, I'll simply play something else. Plenty of good games, won't be paying a fee for a 5 year old game. =)
