Some documents from a private presentation Crytek gave at E3 about the new technology they have in the engine for Crysis 3 was leaked on the web. The most interesting to me is what is bolded in the blurb below about a new method of rendering to give smooth edges without the need for tessellation.

Most of it is way over my head, I'm sure some of you understand it though :D

...
According to the studio, CryEngine 3 will feature Pixel Accurate Displacement Mapping, Area Lights, Vegetation and Cloth Physics, Real-time reflections or RLR, Volumetric Fog and Cloud Shadows, Composite 3d Lens Flares and Flares Editor, GI + Glossy Reflections and Multi Layered Navigation Mesh.

You can find below the entire Tech document from Crytek’s VIP E3 2012 Presentation that was leaked online a couple of minutes ago. Crytek talks about a new displacement mapping technique – called Pixel Accurate Displacement Mapping – that gives CryEngine 3 the ability to render massively detailed geometry with no visible polygon edges, without the need for tessellation.

Crytek is also using a new shadowing system – called variable penumbra shadows – to achieve the effect which varies the penumbra of the shadow based on its distance to the light caster. Basically, think of it as a dynamic shadow softening technique....

None of those image links work for me. Redirect to homepage. Need to go through main article.

The only thing that interests me is cloth physics. The rest is adding an extra layer of glazing over an already heavily glazed donut so to speak.

I've been waiting for 5 years for some game to come out that brings $500 GPUs to 10 fps on max settings and actually looks next generation (not just some UberSampling AA mode). I hope Crytek delivers this time. Some features such as dynamic tessellation in CryEngine 3 look good. I have a feeling Crytek made Crysis 2 specifically for consoles, which is why it wasn't a breakthrough compared to Crysis 1.

The engine itself is more advanced than CryEngine 2:

Even if it means bringing $500 GPUs to 10 fps on max, I look forward to a real next generation game from Crytek. Let's hope the gameplay delivers too. Yes, Crysis 1 made many systems cry, but it made GPU hardware upgrades a lot more exciting. I also think from some of the comments Crytek made recently about Unreal Engine 4, that there is some friendly rivalry between then and EPIC. They probably want to prove to the world that they have the world's leading game engine and make the best looking games. They almost have to make Crysis 3 the best looking PC game to put EPIC back in their place.

Wow, that looks awesome. Time to upgrade from the 6970 I think.

On another note, my god-fathers company who made the Time Crisis series recently got bought by Crytek.

Can't agree more with that, its side effects are massive too, it exemplifies the PC as the premier gaming platform worth the money spend, it energizes GPU development, the used gpu market, pc upgrade cycles, put forums on fire...its massive! Altough a tough critic of Crysis 1 when it came out it wont came long before i realized what a great development was for the whole game & pc status. I state that WE NEED a priemer Crysis 1 like title every 2-3 years. :)

Agreed, but it needs to be a legitimate GPU killer. Crysis 1 for its time was a legitimately demanding game. It looked head, shoulders, torso, thighs and calves better than any other game out there :D

What we do not need are games with some sort of depth of field, tessellation, physx, deferred MSAA or other such performance hammering feature for a nominal IQ increase. Those features amount to gimmicks to get you to waste money on turning them on.

Even today Crysis still kills modern hardware and is arguably still the best looking game, and if you don't feel that way, in the top three I would think. We need a game that raises that bar and delivers even more realistic visuals. I'm starting to think it's not possible or something. Crysis came out almost six years ago now...

Crysis 1 put massive polygon count first and was poorly coded too! These were the main reasons for running so poorly back then, but nowdays with the massive horsepower and better dev tools there's no excuse for poor single threaded code anymore, what is really needed is a deep focus on PC, better use of current hardware and a more refined and sophisticated graphical experience compared to anything else, which means imho textures and more textures, great lighting, real shadows and real art and love in everything for a real candy feast, sound and animation are important too.

There's no evidence of that; in fact the evidence points to the game being relatively optimal considering the workload it was generating.

The game chose to implement some costly rendering features, but that doesn't mean their implementation was poorly done.

This is unlike Crysis 2 which blatantly abuses tessellation. I just picked up the game from a Steam daily deal, and I’m certainly not using tessellation on my GTX680.

I'd recommend waiting for the game before getting too over-zealous with the upgrades.

That's excellent advice. :thumbsup:

1) Sometimes games get delayed;
2) With the rate of GPU progress, we may see GTX700/HD8000 series before/around Crysis 3;
3) The game may or may not be good. If it's very good looking but very bland/boring to play, the upgrade may not be worthwhile for that particular game; and
4) Without any sort of alpha/beta, we have no idea how much hardware is actually necessary to play it smoothly (Is GTX680 good enough? GTX690? Does it need more than 2GB of VRAM? Can any modern GPU can max it out, etc.)

I just hope they focus on adding tangible improvements to realism (textures, shadows, lighting, particles, physics) and not waste it on things like tessellating the entire concrete dam or all the water in the game.
