Be Free... Be Creative... Be the Developer
An open letter to the Crytek Modding Community.

Hello to all of you.

Here at Crytek we value our community, and we love what you do with our engine. In recent times our focus has been heavily on the development of Crysis 2, however our modding community has been, and remains, very important to us.

So, I wanted to tell you about our plans for supporting you in the future with some really exciting news, which I want to share with you now. Modding with the most powerful game engine is coming back!

We want to see what you guys can do with CryENGINE 3 and we hope we'll be as amazed with the things you create as we have been over the past few years. This time around, we're going to do things in a different way - offering you the right tools to achieve your vision.

First of all, we will be launching an Editor for Crysis 2 early in summer. This will allow you to build new maps, items, gameplay modes and more custom content for Crysis 2. For teams looking for even more creative freedom, we have another option: The free CRYENGINE SDK.

Be Free
In August 2011 we will be launching a free CryENGINE SDK. If you want to use it for fun, like all our previous MOD SDKs it will be completely free of charge, to anyone who wants to play with it! You just register, download the SDK with a personalized license key and you're good to go!

Be Creative
We'll be giving you access to the latest, greatest version of CryENGINE 3 - the same engine we use internally, the same engine we give to our licensees, the same engine that powers Crysis 2.

This will be a complete version of our engine, including C++ code access, our content exporters (including our LiveCreate real-time pipeline), shader code, game sample code from Crysis 2, script samples, new improved Flowgraph and a whole host of great asset examples, which will allow teams to build complete games from scratch for PC.

Be The Developer
With all this power in your hands - we know you're going to do some amazing things with the engine, so we're working out how best to support you.

We'll also be sharing our documentation with you, which is written by the developers of the engine, and we'll be giving you a new and improved crymod.com. We'll update the Free CryENGINE SDK regularly, to make sure you have access to all the advances we make to CryENGINE 3.

If you want to use it to make a game to launch commercially, we'd like to help you with that. If you want to take your product down a traditional commercial route, we will offer an innovative low cost licensing model if you want to release your game digitally.

If you're looking to use CryENGINE for non-gaming purposes, we'll have a per-seat business model for the engine - please enquire at mycryengine.com for further details.

So to go over the details again:

Our next release will be the Crysis 2 Editor, this is for those of you who want to create content for Crysis 2. In August 2011, we will launch our Free CryENGINE SDK for all of you who want to create totally new content on CryENGINE 3. If you just want to make fun, free projects, you can do that free of charge. If you want to try and commercialise your game, we'll be here to help you with that.

I truly value the contribution you have all made to our company and I hope we can continue giving back to you in future.

All the best,

Cevat Yerli

CEO & President of Crytek

This is awesome! Not only can we make mods for Crysis 2 (and have access to all of the assets), we can create stand alone mods that can be distributed for free (if non-profit).

Sweet. There were some good mods for Crysis, looking forward to seeing what the community does with Crysis 2.

*waits patiently for texture pack*

It might be a while.

Many of the textures that are considered 'low res' were made that way. There isn't an 'original' high res texture floating around. Their artists specifically made the textures low res rather than making something nice, and just compressing it. So many textures would have to be completely redone. Do-able for sure, and has been done before. I just wonder how much of a priority it will get.

That seems to be the biggest gripe so I'd assume it's a pretty well requested mod. And I know it'll take a while, that's why I said "patiently" ;)

My guess is that it will be a community effort that will perpetually increase modified textures in the pack as it goes on rather than one concrete official release.

This is good news. I don't personally care much as I never played a custom Crysis map or mod, but I know people do some cool things with it.

I tried the Sandbox 2 editor once but couldn't figure anything out. I didn't read any tutorial. I just thought I could jump in and make a map with in a truck, a tire, and a door, but it seemed pretty complex.

Although there was some complaining about it not having launched with this stuff (usually with something about how they don't want custom stuff to interfere with DLC) I think it was the right decision. This way, you get the Crysis 2 games in the hands of millions of people who want to play it. Such a small percentage of them care about creating or playing custom maps, it makes sense to get the game released and follow up with the editor in a couple of months.

Those that have actually bought this game...I only seen play it for about 3 days.

Pretty sure it's a HUGE failure on the PC end

No, there is a SUBJECTIVE review...from what seems to be a console fluffer...

Don't you think my "great and honest" was subjective too? You didn't correct me by saying NO, just pointed out the existing obvious. Nice try though. Aren't you the guy who's abnormally bitter about this game for some reason? Go troll elsewhere.

If I had paided for I would have benn bitter.
But I didn't buy this game, because it was a downgrade from the original.
And that review wasn't honest...or great.
It was mediocre...like the game.

So because it was a downgrade from the original you stole it? If you want to play a game, you buy it. If you don't want to play it you don't purchase it. Simple as that. You wanted to play it, you should of forked out the money for it or waited till it was cheaper if you didn't want to pay the current price.

Only big failure if you have inflated expectations.

Here's a great, honest review of it.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/3079-Crysis-2

I don't see how the expectations for this game would have been anything but inflated. It didn't deliver and the gamers are angry. The same happened to Farcry2, a game that I personally liked enough to replay it several times since it was launched. It received very poor user reviews however.

Also, while calling Lonbjerg a troll, you probably realize you're the one starting about 99% of the Crytek related threads. People have opinions that's all!

So if you buy the game the game experience gets improved. Learn something new every day.....

I never said it improves in any way, shape, or form. Maybe you should reread what you quoted. If you bought it it was cause you wanted to play it, so be it. But just because you wanted to play it and didn't want to pay for it doesn't mean you can just steal it. If you wanted to play it that bad, buy it, otherwise go without.
