Anyone with predictions on how the CPU landscape will be once Conroe launches? specifically what will happen to AMD?

try is the key word here. hopefully AM2 based chips will allow for fast enough speeds.

I don't care who wins so long as they keep making them faster. My 3GHz Northwood will be 3 or 4 years old before I replace it with something fitting of the price tag.

AMD will probably drop in price even more... if they can't compete on performance, they'll need to compete on price.

But man, i wish Conroe would come out sooner. I need to build an HTPC... and i don't think i can hold off till after summer. :(

I hope AMD would come out with cpus that are better or equal to intel...otherwise, intel (the monopoly) would win and then comes the higher prices and slow moving technology....

how much slower can it possibly move? CPU"s have been incremental since a64 came through knocking down buildings. The best part of this conroe stuff is that it looks like CPU's will finally become less of a limitation on the far more advanced GPU's.

I don't think AMD's gonna pull this one off. Unless AMD starts using the full benefits that DDR2's increased bandwidth has to offer (use some thing like DDR2-667), it's going to lag behind Intel quite a bit. 40% advantage in FEAR is nothing to joke about. AMD better work their asses off for AM2.

AMD will probably have to lower prices in order to compete, since I doubt DDR2 will allow them to catch up in most benchmarks.

It's hard to know for sure if the results represented are entirely accurate, but it does appear Conroe will have a significant advantage.

Since AMD isn't bandwidth starved even now, i really don't see much benefit to switching to DDR2, if any.

Unless AMD can ramp up their clockspeeds majorly, it's not going to be even close. And well, i really doubt that's gonna happen either. In fact, it seems Conroe will be at higher clockspeeds than AMD by year end.

The 3.33GHZ EE chip looks like AMD killer
Remember AMD made the FX57 just to show off how fast there CPUs could go.
Now its Intel?s turn.
Revenge is dish best severed cold and with the new performance per watt it will be.
I hope this will drive AMD dual cores down in price.

My Opteron 285's will be cheap ! That will be the time to get them ! (and probably a Conroe also)
