snip:

A couple of weeks ago we got our first look at Crysis Warhead, the new game in the Crysis saga. Warhead isn't the sequel to last year's Crysis, but rather a stand-alone adventure that tells the story of Sergeant Michael "Psycho" Sykes, one of the secondary characters in Crysis. This is an offshoot game, so you don't need to own Crysis to enjoy it. Warhead promises to be much more action-packed than its predecessor, with larger and more intense battles. Recently I got the chance to get some play time with the E3 2008 build of Warhead to see how it's coming along. So sit back, read up, and check out the three gameplay movies of my experience below.

I actually can't wait for Warhead. I was obviously impressed with Crysis's graphics but not so much on the later gameplay/story. I'm hoping Crytek has learned from their mistakes and ends up coming out on top with this fleshed out addition to the storyline.

big hopes, if the title is right and it's gonna retail for $30 bucks I don't see how it will be any better than the original.

For $30 I am certainly going to pick up this game. I've now got something to use my Amazon $25 gift card towards. :)

Rockin!

I kinda liked the Psycho character too. I'll definately pick it up.

Reading this thread the other day made me decide to go back and play Crysis again. It's amazing how good you can get at operating that suit by the end of the game. I'm in the Village level and cleared it with my bare hands.

Whats the ratio of Koreans to Aliens going to be? It seems most people preferred the first part of Crysis.

Yeah I like the way the GfW (rest in peace) review stated it...

Crysis teaches you how to fish and then at the end of the game drops you in a desert.

$30? Hey, a Crytek game will finally be priced to what it's worth.

I didn't buy Farcry till it hit $30 and the demo of Crysis gives me all the graphical prettyness I need.

I know I'm probably in the minority but I loved the alien ship segment in Crysis and thought it was just too short. I wouldn't mind some more levels in that environment though not all in zero gravity..maybe a crashed ship or something that Psycho can go in and kick some alien ass.

In any case I loved Crysis and will surely get Warhead.

UPDATE: Sept 16 release - preorder for only $25!

www.eastore.com/crysiswarhead

Just put my money where my mouth is and pre-ordered it for $25 + tx. It's supposed to be as long as Crysis but with more action, better AI, optimized engine, new multiplayer maps and modes...a bargain in my book.

Course, if you didn't like the first I doubt this one will be different enough to warrant your attention.

It's a "full game" priced as an "expansion".

I have no problem with developers using already refined resources (in this case, pretty much all the art assets from Crysis) to tell different parts of a story. I'm gonna lay money down though that this thing is on the short side - 10 hours or less.

CoD4 single player was like 6 hours :)

But with Far Cry (20 hours!) and Crysis (10-12) I spent a ton of hours more than the listed time trying out different levels from different angles and approaches. It's a large world even if ultimately linear, and was fun to try stealth in one part, then try it again guns blazing, etc. CoD there was no reason to replay at all since it was very, very linear, like HL2.

I think FarCry is more fun to replay, even if you use the same tactics each time, but Crysis has more tactics you can use in replaying, with the suit and all.

There's a reason I don't own any of the CoD games - the scripts are way too obvious, and frankly, they're just not that fun. Single player anyway...I really don't care about the MP. I don't really get off on your love of "trying new stuff" either because the story's the same. Some people love that "how will the game react" thing...I can't be bothered.

Even in games designed around that idea. I played Mass Effect and *loved* every second, but I can't get into a replay to make some different choices and see where the story goes differently because the differences are, relatively speaking, pretty minor.

HL2 - now there's a series I'm still on edge for. They've created arguably the best fictional universe and storyline in the FPS genre. I only really play games for characters and story now, because after a while you start to realize that pretty much all of them are killing something/one somehow, and the only variation occurs in how they dress that up.

Luckily, the industry seems to be stepping up and we're getting a lot of titles these days with either excellent story and atmosphere or fun characters.

I'm very excited about Warhead, I may be in a minority but I loved Crysis' gameplay, I replayed the game 3 times and when I get a videocard that can max it out completely, I'll probably do it again.

I'm 100% sure I'll get Warhead.

Funny, I'm almost exactly the opposite. I'm all about gameplay/implementation/graphics and as long as there is a basic story setup I don't care if it makes sense or is well plotted, although bad voice acting does detract from immersion.

Blacksite Area51 had a pretty good story going, but the mechanics were so crappy, the control loose, collision detection innaccurate, the animation so stuttering that I couldn't enjoy it at all. It could have been penned by Spielberg and it wouldn't have helped. Clive Barker didn't have much success with Jericho and Orson Scott Card's Advent Rising blew chunks.

Ideally a game will have great gamplay and a great story, but if one of them has to go, I say adios to story, and give me something to kill!
