Hi,

I just bought Crysis 3 for $10.
I have only played a small section but one thing I have noticed is quality of the FMVs. I generally prefer cutscenes to be rendered in game. Most of the FMVs that I have seen are heavily compressed and look worse than if the developer had rendered in game. Mass Effect 1 cutscenes looked much better than ME 2. I suppose heavily compressed FMVs look fine when playing on a TV from a distance but not on a PC.

Anyway, I hope Crysis 3's reduced compression algorithm is a trend that continues.
Anyone else notice this?

i havent played crysis 3 but i agree that most video is definitely too compressed these days. i dont think that 4k video would be so popular if people saw lossless RGB8 1080p. lossy audio compression in games has got to go... an extra GB or so is nothing.

So wait, are you saying that Crysis 3's FMVs are good, or bad? You didn't make it clear in your post.

From the little bit of Crysis 3 I played, the FMVs seemed to look good to me.

FMV's are garbage in-engine should be how they do it always at this point. In a cutscene everything is scripted they can make it look pretty.

FMVs give you the freedom of using as many fancy graphical and particle effects as you want without having to worry about performance on the user's side, because it's pre-rendered.
