Did you even read all of what I posted? I said that everyone doesn't go out and steal everything because people believe that hard work and quality should be rewarded.

I did read what you said. The reason people dont steal cars is because there are significant penalties for doing so. It has nothing to do with them having a passion for German engineering.

The solution is what I posted above. Good products, easy to consume, no hindering DRM. Devs/publishers don't need to focus all of their efforts on getting rid of something that we aren't ever going to get rid of. They need to focus their efforts on making products that are exceptional and make people line up at the door with money in hand.

Steam is drm. One person posted already that they would pirate before steam. There are others that pirate BECAUSE of steam. it's a mess.

You do not have the right to pick and choose your way through content trying as much as you want and then maybe if the moon is full and you feel exceptionally charitable give something to some content company because you believe in them. This isn't church.

You obviously do not comprehend any of what I am saying and any further typing in this topic would be time better spent with a fork in my eye.

No, you do not have the right, but you have the ability. Thats the reality that has to be dealt with. They are not dealing with it very well. Some would argue theyre dealing with it just fine. I believe they can do a lot better, but it doesnt involve changing the internet, breaking someones CPU, or any of that crazy fascist bullshit.

wow really? You said that people buy cars instead of steal them because they recognize the work put into making the car. I said they would steal the cars if significant penalties weren't attached to stealing them.

Somehow I don't understand you? 😱

If all the pirates truly believe they are not stealing then I suggest they save the bandwidth, head to the local game store, grab whatever game they want, and then walk out smiling to the cashier saying "It's ok I'm just pirating this game."

"Oh, that's fine, you probably wouldn't have bought it anyways right?," says the cashier

"I still may buy it if it's good." says pirate.

"Oh, well perhaps you can go and pirate a new 55" tv while you're here as well." says cashier.

Pirate replies,"You know I can't do that because stealing merchandise in a store is theft and I will go to jail."

You dont have the right to privacy outside of your home. So why should data entering and leaving your home have that right? Inside your home is another story.

Then why do people buy media instead of stealing it? It's not like anyone believes they're going to get caught if they download mp3s or video games.

Because unless you go inside someones home to physically spy on them, there's no way to know who is actually infringing.

BTW, how would you appreciate it if I wiretapped you because I suspected you of wrongdoing? Your phone is just data, you know.

You're argument is false. Some of my favorite films were made for under $100k.

media has been pirated long before the internet. Changing the internet will not change pirating. It's a well known thing; it's information. Once information is out there, you can't take it back.

Secondly, whether you want to admit it or not, companies ARE making money. Much more money than they ever have in the past. All this talk about omg the companies are going to quit making movies, music and games is bunk. All you have to do is look at music. People are STILL writing, recording, selling, performing music. The only thing that has changed is how it's distributed, and maybe the overall income to the makers. Guaranteed record execs are still getting their share.
What is even better is that now MORE people have an opportunity because of the internet with bypassing record companies all together. Options.

The thing is - everything that CAN be dumped, copied will be, and those that can't - will be worked at even harder, why? Human nature. You know what else is human nature? Greed. This also plays into it. Do you ever wonder WHY the film industry was against VHS? Record companies against tapes? Every move they make in "higher-def" is an attempt at control. Unfortunately for them, setting those standards also sets in motion another company profiting from some form of "record/copy" device related to that technology for the consumers own use. Hand in hand with that is copying of their material. It's a circle.

Then why do people buy media instead of stealing it? It's not like anyone believes they're going to get caught if they download mp3s or video games.

Point taken. I would argue that if you could steal a car without worry of prosecution the number of people stealing cares would increase. Some would still buy. I made a mistake speaking in absolutes.

This thread has completely degenerated. Can we stick to talking about how Crysis 2 performs and how the graphics are and such?

IMO the game is going to be a huge sales success. This beta build is buggy to the point that most people who try it will wind up buying it to get the whole package. That said, the game performs beautifully, and IMO it has substantially better graphics than Crysis did.

I'm looking forward to Crysis 2 and will be purchasing it when it comes out. If anything, this beta build is going to build hype for the game. The people on here vilifying the pirates aren't seeing the bigger picture. People with the money to actually buy this game aren't going to be happy with the beta.

It's always better to buy games anyhow. You typically lose out on the multiplayer aspects of games if you pirate them.

I agree with the people who complain about the DRM. It would be interesting to see what would happen if they released a DRM free game. My guess is that sales would be unaffected, although that would be difficult if not impossible to prove.

I would be interested in seeing those films. Would you mind sharing your list? I was serious about that movie being good and only costing 30k. It's a great accomplishment to work down at that level and achieve something worthwhile.

Oblivion had no key, and just a disc check.
Fallout 3 had no key, and eventually had a patch for disc free play.

This * 9000. I'd love to see Simonizor and BD2003 do this. At least it would get them out of society.

Here's the deal folks: pirating is stealing. Prove me wrong and not with some nuanced BS "argument". Explain how taking something tangible that you did not pay for isn't stealing.

what you are saying is "I get to have the house, the family, the car and the disposable income" and because my chosen profession is in a industry that you can just eat all you want for free I am denied those things by you.

Well fuck you.
lol, did a software pirate rape your mom?

You can try to justify it in whatever way you want to make it seem better to you, but it's still breaking the law.

I don't know if I agree with the above as the positivism v. natural law debate is premised on the idea that there might be different sources of law. For example, under a police state it might be against the law not to turn someone over to the authorities who speaks out against the authorities. Suppose your spouse, in the privacy of your own home, mentions negative thoughts about the authorities. Would the 'right' thing include the spouse turning the dissenter over to the authorities?

You clearly endorse a positivistic view of the law. The person to whom you were responding was more influenced by concepts of natural law. I don't think anyone has been able to prove one apodeictically superior to the other.

It is stealing, however in many cases it does not cost the publisher anything.

Like I said, the people who can afford the games generally will pay for them as you get more features (multiplayer, patches, etc.).

Its not stealing. Its very similar, but its not the same. Its morally wrong to the same degree I'd say, but that doesnt mean its the same act.

The simple answer to your question is that data isnt tangible.

With theft, the personal you steal from loses something tangible, and you gain. With piracy, the only thing lost is potential. I dont see how it can be any easier to understand.

Both are bad. The degree to which is irrelevant. I'm certainly not defending piracy in any shape, form or fashion.

im going to say that its partly cryteks fault for not releasing a demo for PC and PS3, i mean cmon....catering to one console is going to bite you in the ass somehow
