I have heard that Crysis 2 ran better on Nvidia cards, is this expected to continue with CryEngine 3?

the reason crysis 2 ran better on nvidia cards is because the ran loads of tesselation where it wasn't even seen whether that'll continue or not is not known

When Crysis 3 launches, chances are HD8970 and GTX780 will be on the market, or close to its launch. Therefore, trying to project which GPU will run the game better is very difficult.

Since June at least, the difference in performance for 7970 GE vs. 680 stock vs. stock or OC vs. OC (or 7970 vs. 670) is pretty much splitting hairs.

If Crysis 3 has extreme levels of tessellation, I am giving the edge to Kepler, but mainly because I think GTX780 will be faster than HD8970 overall. As far as GTX670/680 vs. 7970/7970 GE are concerned, I think NV cards will be faster but they could be equally slow (i.e., low 30-40 fps range).

I am asking because of other games that may use CE3 right now, I heard that MWO is using it so I want to be prepared for when Open Beta comes out.

What happens if:

1) The game gets delayed? I got an 8800GTS to play Starcraft 2, but by the time that game came out, I already upgraded to GTX470s.

2) The game is so GPU demanding that it crushes any single-GPU card at max settings? When Crysis 1 came out, it destroyed 8800GTX SLI. Even now 5 years later not a single high-end GPU can fully achieve 60 fps throughout the game. Crytek can easily make a game that mops the floor with the GTX690 if they wanted to based on their track record.

I would say, if you don't have a current generation card, grab a GTX670. If you still need more performance, grab a 2nd one next year at a discounted price. If you currently don't need a new GPU upgrade, just keep waiting until the game is released as GPUs only get faster and/or cheaper. I wouldn't buy a $400-500 GPU now to futureproof for some game next year unless you were already eyeing an upgrade in the first place this fall.

Crytek has already stated that Crysis 3 will make PCs cry. Considering Crysis 2 barely moved the bar in graphics over Crysis 1 (and in some ways it looks worse), I have a feeling not a single $500 GPU today will play it maxed out at 1080P.

The N670 is a phenomenal gpu, tacking on a second one a year down the road will be cost effective upgrade that will yield a substantial performance increase.

a 460 1GB or 5xx or 6xx is perfect for today's games.

Im hope for Crysis 3 to have better graphics but not a performance hit, as long as I dont put ultra high... high is good..... 60fps smooth...

Just played through Crysis, Crysis Warhead and now running through Crysis 2.
glad I procrastinated on playing these games because now I can max them all out at 1920x1200.
Even though those charts make it seem like my GTX570 barely cuts it, I'm running Crysis 2@ 1920x1200 on ultra with decent framerates.
I'll wait until the games actually come out and if I can't play them with eye candy then I'll upgrade to whatever card fits the budget.

I'm really asking because I'm in the MWO Beta and wanted better performance....

What do you have and what kind of performance are you getting now? They lifted the NDA on MWO today so feel free to go into details. I'm getting low 30's on a 6850 and Phenom II 3.8GHz. If I had to I could certainly get by on this, it feels smoother than the framerate would indicate. I have a 7850 on the way just to try and get this rig to last me another year. I run a GPU/CPU meter in game and my GPU is usually pegged at 96%+ with my CPU cores jumping from 50%-90%. That's on high settings at 1920x1080.

I am asking about a graphics card because I have already planned the rest of my system around Mfenn's suggestions in the General Hardware forum sticky. I just need to know whether AMD or Nvidia is the way to go now...

I don't think anyone's going to know for sure until they at least get the DX11 update for the engine in. If you're itching to pull the trigger on new hardware that 460 should still be able to carry you after a CPU upgrade until there's more info. Every complaint about performance I've seen over this game has a dual core CPU behind it.

What kind of resolution are you using and what's your budget?

I vote for pauldin's suggestion. The 460 should get you through, and if Crysis 3 is your driver for performance wait until you have something solid to base your purchase on. The other solution is to upgrade now, and if the new GPU is not what you were hoping for then sell it and replace with something acceptable.
