CryENGINE 2 on the 360 and PS3

IGN: What's the performance difference of the CryENGINE on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 compared to the PC? Are you able to tailor the engine to each platform?

Harald Seeley: Yes, we definitely tailor the engine specifically to each platform. More than just the difference in CPU and video hardware capabilities of PCs and consoles is at play here. So are the much smaller memory budgets we must work with, the lack of a hard disk on some models, and the acceptance requirements of the hardware vendors themselves. All have an effect on how we approach each version of the engine.

The surprising thing has been how well the consoles can perform visually, once this tailoring is in place. We expect the final outcome will result in games that look like they're running at high settings, or nearly high settings, on a PC. Actually, we found it as much or more challenging to address the memory limitations of the consoles when converting our current AI system, as we did while converting our rendering engine or physics system, which was not something you might have expected at the start.
 
It's not being rendered in real time. If it is, it's going through a 8 core Xenon render farm to get those kinds of frame rates. It's going to be a long time before even any PC can get such high fps on Cryengine 2, much less the 360 or PS3. Even on dual 8800gtx's Crysis stutters at 20 to 10 fps. That demo has nearly twice the detail of Crysis.

Also, it's likely they'll target a low resolution and upscale.

They still won't be able to achieve near close to that level on detail on any modern PC/console and still maintain a playable framerate no matter how much you drop down the resolution.
 
Well you have to remember consoles run games at 1280x720, a decent PC with a 8800GT and 2.2GHz+ Core 2 Duo can play Crysis at Very High on that resolution.

So yeah, I wouldn't say it's comparable but impressive nevertheless.

At the convention, we usually ran it on a generic, but somewhat high end, computer whose mail order parts price was only about 1650 dollars. It could also run quite well, with medium visual quality settings, on the 650 dollar budget PC we also had set up at the show.
