Reality check. The US military is vastly superior to China's. In any open engagement outside of Asia we would absolutely embarrass them. However I don't think there's anyway we could beat China in Asia, the losses required to sustaining a ground campaign on their turf would be ridiculous.

A problem is that people have become risk-averse pussies in the US thanks to our litigious society. Lawyer up or die. But obviously this is too expensive for most.

That's exactly right. China's "air force" consists of crappy planes and knock-offs. Their Navy is a joke. This "superpower" is the same country that just a few short years ago, analysts said would not even be able to successfully take Taiwan in an armed conflict.

In the 80's they said the same thing about Japan, and they were in better shape politically than China is today.

It is because one American sold out the other.

In the 70s, we were told to leave the rich alone. They will create jobs and trickle down the wealth.

The only thing that trickled down was urine and fecal matter - and, we are considered ungrateful and rude for not thanking the rich, on them soiling us.

Their rich's wealth grew and grew for the past 40 years. Our jobs got shipped overseas, while prices remained the same or increased. So, we have no way to make money, nor afford the increase in prices.

Profits swell, as the economic quality of the everyday man decreased.

Things will eventually break.

China today has a spirit of industrialism, capitalism, that we seem to have forgotten.

lol no they don't. China has been built on near slave labor, theft of intellectual property, and zero environmental regulations. It's easy to make a profit from a factory that pays almost nothing, doesn't pay for software, and can pollute at will.

Sounds like America before unions, work and environmental safety regulations were put into place - the same things most people on these forums call "the real enemy" of America.

Will take minimum of decades for China to stop sucking sh*t for the average person there.

Or never. In order for this to happen China would have to develop more high value manufacturing like the United States. Then they will face the same problem. Dollar wise the U.S. manufacturers more than any other nation... we just need fewer people to do it.

Think about how much advantage China has because they can produce ultra cheap low dollar value goods because of the $2/day worker? That's the bulk of their workforce.

Lets look at what it would really mean if China becomes the world's economically dominant country:

1. Chinese Yuan replaces the USD as the currency used in international business interactions.
2. Chinese, Mandarin ?, replaces English as the world's Lingua franca.
3. China becomes the dominant Pacific rim military power.
4. China's culture replaces the West in terms of music, art, movies, etc.

I doubt if 2, 4, and maybe 4 could happen without a complete collapse of the West. But if all 4 scenarios did happen I doubt it would mean the END OF THE WORLD.

Personally, I can not get feared up over an ascendant China or India. As someone pointed out earlier in this thread it could mean and probably would have to mean an improvement in the quality of life for a big chunk of the world's population.

I don't care. The American government is in bed with the banking cartel, and wiping its ass with the Constitution. Although I'd be interested to see how the American people will react when the US defaults on its debt, and the IMF tries to impose austerity measures - will we finally tell the international bankers to go screw themselves or just bend over like our European counterparts.

Is China having similar problems as Japan? Such as the "graying" of population, ie. more older people to taken care of, real estate buble, etc.?

Don't forget that China is also having bigger problems such as running out of clean water, desertication in the Northwest area (Gobi desert), polution (air, water, land) and of course, corruption.

We will wait and see.

China's Economy will finally grow bigger than the US economy, sure, but China's got 400% the popluation ..... so it will still be a shithole for another 100 years.

China will remain a shitty place to live precisely because of its huge population.

China is sitting on a really big real estate bubble. There's going to be a pop relatively soon.

Interesting you mention that. Just had a conversation with a friend that's working for an architectural firm in China and she told me they can't come up with designs fast enough for clients. Real estate prices have skyrocketed there.

I have a friend who came from China as a 6 yr old child old. He went for a visit to where he was born in China and stayed 2 weeks. His take? China sucks.

I have a feeling they will either poison themselves from pollution or just collapse.

Why would you think that a large population makes a place shitty to live in?

Mega-Cities, Cities with 10 Million or more residents, are growing and growing and expanding. It has to be invigorating, to live in a Mega-City, versus the suburb or country-side.

In the 70s (or whenever) in your story, the GOVERNMENT and ECONOMISTS told you that wealth would trickle down.

It surely wasn't the people that are actually out there making money, that told you wealth would trickle down.

So take your beef up with the Government and Economists.

Are you going to do that? Or blame Rich People?

Alternatively, If you are going to blame Government and Economists, FOR Rich People, then you may want to review what you think is good about Government.

the global economy was the worst idea ever in the history of the world
We have a Global Economy now. It's based on supply and demand, with Government Regulation and Taxation, tearing their little, un-economic, holes in the general principle.

What you, and most people, are against, is Government regulating the Economy.

So remember that, when you go to the ballot box, and vote for less Government.

As others have said, all empires fall eventually. However, I don't see any country establishing the kind of dominance the US has since the end of the cold war. We will likely continue to lose influence, but I don't see anyone passing us anytime soon.

From an economic standpoint, China is not the future. Despite the fact that many people believe the hype, a command economy is NOT a competitive advantage.
