This morning after I got off of work, I opened a can of progresso new england clam chowder. I saw that my dad had a pepper grinder and I decided to put some crushed black pepper in my soup. I could not believe the difference. That processed shi'ite pales in comparison.
I used to not care for too much pepper. Now I can't get enough.

Has anyone else noticed the difference in taste?

You are a damn disgrace to coonasses everywhere... putting canned pepper on canned food... during duck season, no less.

HEY I am not NOT a coonass! :| :|

I live in Southern LA, but I am NOT a coonass!!

Dude, I just got off of work. I needed something to eat that was quick. I ate gumbo twice last week and I'm sure it had REAL pepper in it. I just have never noticed the difference until now...

Don't I feel like a dumbass. I thought pepper was pepper. I didn't know there was any difference.

The only difference is age and exposure to air. Pepper you crush in a grinder is far "spicier" since the whole peppercorns retain their flavor far longer than when it is crushed.

Leave that freshly crushed pepper "out" for a week or two - it will lose its flavor (much like the canned pre-ground pepper).

what's a coonass?

--

the taste is in the "essential oils" (not sure if oil) that exists in fresh pepper because it's fresh that does not "exist" in preground pepper due to age and processing.

it's like the taste of freshly roasted (still warm) nuts and such...

like fresh orange juice

like the moment right after or during that orgasm ;-)

<< what's a coonass? >>

Ya know, that's a good question. I've always taken it as a jokingly derogatory label for a person of Cajun descent (which I am, on my father's side). Some people just use it to refer to people who live in the more rural areas of Southern Louisiana, which tend to be marshy. It kinda has the stigma of "redneck," but less negative and not many people use the term outside of the obligatory "coonass jokes," which tend to be told in a pseudo-Cajun accent and usually involve someone named Boudreaux, who is your typical Cajun. Personally, I have no problem with someone calling me a coonass, but some people take offense to it just as some people took offense to the term "redneck" in that earlier thread. Now, as for where the word itself came from, my dad and I prefer to say that it came from a racoon's ass, and not the more racist way it could be interpreted.
