All I get is black screen with sound. I think my TV doesn't want to run at 640 x 480 or something. Maybe it doesn't like windows 7. I don't know. If anyone else has the problem and finds a fix let me know.

You can try changing DosBox's resolution. Origin Games\Crusader No Remorse\data\Game\DOSBox\dosbox.conf

Then change fullresolution= to your native obviously, and I think you need to change output= to openglnb, in order to make it display fullscreen. You may need to change aspect= to True, as well.

With this games controls being some of the worst ever devised. I set it up with XPadder using a 360 controller, and it works surprisingly well. Left analog is the numpad for movement, left bumper is roll, right is run, the d-pad handles guns and inventory scrolling, and ABXY are shoot, use etc. Makes the game so much more enjoyable (I remember struggling with the game in the 90's as well). Also, I specifically noted the analog stick as the numpad because the game has multiple movements methods, but the numpad is the only one that translates properly to a 1:1 style stick movement.

this is from like, windows 3.1? 95?

I played it through back then, its an isometric style sort of shooter type game. Not much depth considering the age and I think I'd only play it for the nostalgic factor.

Not loads of depth, but it has some large and well designed levels, various traps and environmental hazards, and is just oddly fun considering what it is. Of course as my last post describes, the controls are awful without a controller, and that requires setup.

I remember playing the demo long ago. I already have both games on GoG and no free game offered by origin has tempted me.

Ah, very nice! Thanks for the heads up, might have missed it otherwise (I don't open Origin every day). Fun coincidence, the developers' name is (was) Origin Systems, and it's now on Origin, thought it was amusing. I got good memories of Crusader. I remember renting the PS1 version for double duration (that was... 4 days renting I think) and completed it on the second or third day. And kept playing it afterwards. I definitely had my money's worth.

A good review by Lord Karnage, for anyone whom might be curious about the game and never played it (review is from a couple of years ago). He reviewed the Saturn version, pretty much the same thing as the PS1 and DOS versions.

This game was pretty damn awesome in the day, although I just don't see it holding up particularly well today given the evolution of action games. But it's free, so check it out because I do think it was a fairly significant game for its time.

I have this on a CD somewhere, but never played it. Should I try?

I just replayed it a couple of years ago. It is still fun but the controls take some getting used to for sure. If you like action games with some light puzzle elements it is worth trying.
