I knew my brake pads were getting thin - this thing (1993 LandCruiser) eats them for breakfast. But I've been planning to rebuild the whole front axle for the past few weekends, and the brakes at the same time. But it keeps getting pushed back due to weather, ex changing her schedule, etc. So on the way home from work today I hear this nasty grinding noise :(:( Put it up on the jackstand and discover one of the pistons is siezed and has the pad down to bare metal. Fvck Good thing I was planning on replacing the rotors at the same time - already have those.

Tried to get the caliper off to see if I could free the piston and twisted off a 3/8" extension. It's dark, it's raining, and I'm already breaking things, so the hell with it. Arranged to borrow a car for tomorrow. But I doubt I'll be able to get a new/rebuilt caliper before thursday or friday.

I've been there...brake work on rusted-solid calipers with cheap, break-y tools in the middle of winter in Indiana is the WORST.

Yea, it certainly could be worse - at least it isn't winter.
Looks like I have a good excuse to go get an impact wrench and some good sockets. Time to retire the college-era crap tools.

So ... one place in the whole town has them in stock for $107 each. If I can wait till friday, I can get em for $50 each - but I'd rather not impose on my neighbor that's lending me a car for that long.

Impose and insure you return the car with a full tank of gas and a six pack of his fav beverage.

Land Cruisers rock, BTW. They have the one thing I wish my Trooper had; a solid front axle. Good luck with the rebuild.

Yep, the full tank is a given even if I just keep it a day. They don't drink though, so nix on the 6 pack.
I'll give them a call this afternoon and see.

Yea, I love the cruiser - but damn does it suck gas. I've been considering getting an econobox daily driver. This whole episode is adding some weight to the two car scenario as well.

Well, my neighbor told me no problem with keeping the car till Friday or Saturday. Wow - I hope I can be as generous someday

But ...
I just called Checker Auto to see if the new calipers were in yet. The guy told me that their delivery truck had an accident and rolled. He expects another 2 to 3 days to get the parts now. Forgot to ask if two days meant Saturday or monday. Damn! :| It's really going to piss me off if I can't finish this job this weekend.
