All the Carnival/Royal Carribean/etc have what I'd say are WalMart Cruises...

Things also change drastically when school is out (at least down here in S. Florida where locals just show up to score last minute tickets cheap with like 20 grand kids with them).

It's like the Orlando theme parks, totally a different experience in early-mid October (<30min waits for anything) than July 4th weekend (3+ hour waits on some attractions).

So true, way back in the early '80's we went to Disney during an off peak time, I must have rode Space mountain 20+ times!, no wait at all..

Still debating between two auctions tomorrow. How enjoyable it is will depend on the pricing.
Sweet! Scored a beautiful china cabinet for $45, solid wood (cherry?) I was thinking "wtf?" when the bidding stopped - I didn't want it, and still don't want it. It's going on Craigslist tomorrow = profit. Got a butcherblock stand for the kitchen for $25, an antique desk to remove the pretend desk (ikea type crap) in the living room for $45, and a solid oak fruit press for $30.

Edit: wife liked the china cabinet, but it was too big for the space & wife still likes hers better. Sold it online in 10 minutes. :) (profit!)

My co-worker went on a carnival cruise a couple months back with his wife. He found a coupon deal online for like $600 total for a couple of days. I think he was gone for a whole week too. Said it was a lot of fun.

I've never been on one but maybe I'll go one day.

I'll be jumping out of a plane tomorrow at 14,000 feet so that should be exciting.

Finishing up my 4th day in Maui. Fly out tomorrow morning. Stayed at the new Andaz resort. All company paid for, sales performance recognition trip. The XP EOL has treated me well.

Took my private jet to Paris, France. Don't know why Kate and I keep coming here, dirty, stinky place. But she loves going to Au Bon Accueil for dinner. Just finished up a couples massage and now we are going to "take a nap" before we get ready for dinner.

Yes, either you pay premium price per drink on a cheap cruise.
Or you pay premium price for a cruise with open bars..

My problem with cruises isn't the prices of the drinks. It's the horribad beer selections. How fvcking hard is it to pick up a few kegs of GOOD beer at port, or even just some bottles. These ships have like 3000-6000 people on them.

No kidding. The best option is usually some euro macro brew. I can understand for cruise out of international ports, but cruises leaving out of US ports there is no excuse. Oceania allows outside alcohol on and I brought a case of beer to my stateroom. Only are supposed to drink it in the stateroom, but at least I had good beer. (To be fair they had better options than most)

Long day Saturday - early morning going to be in a photo for the front cover of Sports Illustrated next week. Then right after last long run before the Boston Marathon. And later that night, being honored on the field at one of the local sports teams.

Pics/proof/back story??

This is more interesting than some gay cruise alky is going on.

No mention of his pseudo-family...Hmm...

Long day. I was invited due to being at the Finish Line last year when the bombs went off and running this year.

I'm somewhere in there, the SI issue comes out on Wednesday.

At the shooting, I was given this scarf for running this year by a group around the country that is knitting scarfs for everyone in this year's marathon.

After our last long run, we went to the Boston Marathon Memorial at the Boston Public Library.

Cruise was good, a little humid early morning and rained for an hour one day early as well, but was excellent weather.

Three bachelorette parties were going on and that is always fun to be around. One of the brides do be did fall on her face at one point though and has a pretty bruised cheek going into a wedding on Easter. They were two doors down from me.

Never got off the boat, Senior Frogs and the rest of the Bahamas/Atlantis is pretty much what's in my backyard everyday in Florida and if I want gambling we have much more looser casinos about 20mins away from me than the ship's and their modified games (like Blackjack without Queens in the deck).

Relaxed a lot, talked a lot. Good weather and drinks.

I've never even heard of Oceania ... I usually Take Carnival, though my grandparents who love to spoil their grandchildren have taken me along on several family cruises, once on Holland America (when I was 18), and once on Disney (when I was 10), and on Royal Carribean (when I was 32). The Royal Carribean trip was after my grandfather had passed away, so it was my grandmother and about 13 other family members...

Anyhow, Royal Carribean has better selection vs Carnival, and Holland America I don't remember since it was before I could drink ...

But really, I just wish they had a few other ales besides newkie brown. A proper good German Hefeweizen, or any of about 100 american wheat ales would work well. And maybe an IPA. Or, what I find really nice on a hot day, is a cream ale. I dislike many lagers, and I HATE all pale lagers. So the choices on the ship are usually like Newkie Brown, Guinness, or Boddingtons

So, on the ship, I wind up drinking mai thai's instead, which of course means I get sick....

Stouts pretty popular in the Caribbean. There's some nice brews from there.

I've uttered it, but never seen a stout that's local. Mostly crappy light lagers. Occasionally a darker ale, but mostly the locals seem to be trying to copy bud.

Its close to Celebrity's Azamara line of smaller ships. Basically one step up from the mass market stuff. They have 600 person and 1100 person ships.

Ahhh, nice ...

I tend to want to go on smaller ships, but, these days, the mass market stuff is all on HUGE boats, or, if not HUGE, they are all boats that were consudered HUGE 10-15 years ago. Usually I wind up on a 60-120 thousand ton ship (1500 or more passengers.)

Anyhow, Fiance is looking for work and has some leads, hopefully she'll find some part time work or something and bring in some extra spending money. My job pays the bills, and saves some for retirement, and still leaves us with play money ... but, not enough for higher end vacations unless we were to go on a lot less vacations ....

Depends on the ship. Oceania has some of the top 'mid-sized' ships out their. The companies like Seabourn / Paul Gauguin / et al dominate the 'small-ship' market.

For 'families' I'd say the larger the ship the better. For couples, the smaller definitely.

One of the good things about Oceania is they have some really nice rooms at the top level plus long journeys rather than port to port and back again. Oceania / Carnival / Royal Caribbean are customers of mine. There are people paying like $10k+ a week on some Oceania ships and they never leave the boat.

I was on the Carnival Ecstasy this last cruise. One of the oldest (may be the oldest in their fleet at a 1991 christening by Kathy Lee Gifford :) ), it was still in nice condition, but dated. Also although a smaller ship, there were too many children on this sailing to enjoy it if you were planning a 'couples only' event. If you wanted to use either of the hot tubs on the ship, they pretty much had 5-10 children in them even past 2am. Even at the only outside drinking bar (there was an outside 'soda' bar as well), some plopped their toddlers/elementary kids on the few seats at the bar available.

That said, I think if I was on this boat with my family; the kids would have a lot of fun and the girl and I would take a day out at Atlantis or one of the hotels in the Bahamas for the day. For the cost, (this cruise was a free bonus for me though); I have known people to get even 5 days on a Carnival cruise for around $200. The drink prices were not that terrible. I had a 'free drink' card, but they still have you sign a receipt. My beers were $5.25 a piece. Many ordering cocktails were also paying about $5-6 a drink. They also have very large drinks at a great value. They do load the ice in drinks that come with it though.

A good site if you don't live by a port is http://www.lowcruiseprices.com you have to pick a date and journey and get contacted back, but they are legit.

They work with a variety of cruise lines. You tell them who you are, where you live, where you want to go and when; how many people/cabins you want, the cruise line you want, if you need airfare and any other comments.

When we used them, we wanted free drinks (alcoholic too), a different embarkation time, to reserve some of their key rooms for our two events, and some other perks.

They worked it out with the cruise line and it worked out for us.
