my friend anything that carries that much human lifes is designed with safety first in mind. The ships have floot doors all kinds of safety precautions in the event of such things. Lifeboats. You must have enough life boats to transport every person on that boat. When you have done damage you put the people on a life boat. Not talking about all the instruments they have to help them. I've seen tankers hit a reef but they don't normally try to steer somewhere else they evacuate.

A no a car and others are different. They don't carry 2000 people that might drown

mmmkay.

It sounds like there were two separate issues:
1. The fact that they actually hit something
2. (and far more important): The staff/crew did not know wtf to do once the ship was damaged.

The first is sortof excusable as accidents happen. The second...not so much.

Its an extraordinary circumstance. I'm sure on a ship that size it may take a bit of time to fully understand the the extent of the damage, and to to take the appropriate action to fix/mitigate the effects of the damage while ensuring passenger safety and comfort.

It comes a point where you are responding to an emergency vs reacting to one ( or is it the other way of around). Training for emergencies is one thing, and actually responding to one when things go to shit will really test a person.

It is still the employers responsibility. Staff always need to be trained for the potential hazards of their workplace. There is a greater responsibility for training when the lives of non-employee's are in their hands.

I mean Captain stated before he was arrested will tell you much into who they suspect for being negligent.

Earlier Saturday, the captain of the Costa Concordia was was arrested, according to a local prosecutor, and reportedly faces criminal charges.

The captain, Francesco Schettino, was detained for questioning by prosecutors, investigating him for suspected manslaughter, abandoning ship before all others, and causing a shipwreck, state TV and Sky TV said. Prosecutor Francesco Verusio was quoted by ANSA as saying Schettino deliberately chose a sea route that was too close to shore.

Looked like the captain left the ship at 12:30am when most ppl didn't get off the ship until 6am. Statement from the captain's lawyer: "I would like to say that hundreds of people owe their life to the captain of the Costa Concordia's skill in an emergency," the lawyer said. "You have to be very good to bring a ship like this which is 117,000 tons and 300 meters long, which is sinking after a collision, close to land to allow for easy rescue so as to save so many people. I think the maneuver was brilliant from a nautical point of view." :O

lol at that. Investigators say they are baffled how he could hit a reef with all that equipment and he was traveling deliberately close to the land. Now he's cover story said he hit a reef and tried to steer to safety. But it looks like he made a mistake and it cost him the boat and peoples lives.

Italians going to use glass bottoms on their ships in the future so that they can see their Warships when cruising around the world

The whole thing is very Italian. From the vessel capitulating to the Captain beating a hasty retreat.
