Cruise/Holmes Engagement Real or Publicity? Poll

Tom Cruise's burgeoning love affair with Katie Holmes has been deemed a publicity stunt by readers of two American magazines.

Polls in People and Us Weekly show that a majority of both publications' readers are sceptical about the sincerity of the Hollywood couple's relationship.

Sixty-three percent of entrants to the People poll believe the romance is a sham, while 65 percent who voted at US Weekly agree.

The public remains dubious as both Cruise and Holmes have films released next month -- Cruise stars in "War of the Worlds," while Holmes is in "Batman Begins."

The New York Times is similarly unconvinced.

Mireya Navarro writes in a May 22 column, "Through all the changes that have swept Hollywood over the years, one thing still endures: strategic love.

"But it is still the easiest way to grab flattering publicity."

Cruise, 42, has been celebrating his love for 26-year-old Holmes during numerous public appearances, most notably on Oprah Winfrey's talk show earlier this week.

On Winfrey's program, Cruise leapt up and down on the host's famous couch shouting, "I'm in love! I'm in love!" while laughing manically.

Yep, so this is no doubt engineered by the studios. Hollywood is so far disconnected from reality that I would have serious trouble believing any of those people have anything resembling real feelings.

I am sure it's real and they love each other and all, but the stupid giddy act was a publicity stunt to pump people into seeing Batman and War of the Worlds. It looks like it backfired. Katie is <trump>fire-a-d</trump> from Batman and every one thinks Tom is a loon and can't stand him.

Suddenly the Pitt/Jolie thing is 1000x more credible.
