Cruise control in the rain = bad....

A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago and totaled her
car.

A resident of Kilgore, Texas, she was traveling between Gladewater &
Kilgore. It was raining, though not excessive, when her car suddenly
began to hydroplane and literally flew through the air.

She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence!
When she explained to the highway patrolman what had happened he told her
something that every driver should know - NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH
YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON. She had thought she was being cautious by
setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the
rain. But the highway patrolman told her that if the cruise control is on
and your car begins to hydroplane - when your tires loose contact with
the pavement -
your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed and you take off like
an airplane.. She told the patrolman that was exactly what had occurred.

We all know you have little or no control over a car when it begins to
hydroplane. You are at the mercy of the Good Lord. The highway patrol
estimated her car was actually traveling through the air at 10 to 15
miles per hour faster than the speed set on the cruise control.

The patrolman said this warning should be listed, on the drivers seat sun
visor - NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY -
along with the airbag warning.

We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed -
but we don't tell them to use the cruise control only when the pavement
is dry.

The only person the accident victim found, who knew this (besides the
patrolman), was a man who had had a similar accident, totaled his car and
sustained severe injuries.

So much bullsh*t, I'm practically swimming in it. Take off like an airplane because somehow you car manages to accelerate after it loses traction to the road surface.

That actual story is unverified (it simply ain't true!) Just do a quick google search... that smells so much like the typical first person hoax bullsh!t type of story.

But, the advice is true... it's not safe to have cruise control on in dangerous conditions, especially when there may be ice on the road.... As far as rain, it's not really applicable until there are conditions where hydroplaning could be a factor.

If you lose control on an icy surface, jamming on the brakes is the last thing you want to do. Keeping your foot on the gas is the next to last thing you want to do... cruise control is equivalent to that.

I have no doubt that using cruise control in the rain is bad. Hell, applying the gas in any low traction scenario is a terrible idea.

But the bullcrap about "taking off like an airplane." Of course you're going to accelerate once you regain traction simply because of the increased engine speed, but I disagree with the dramatics of the original post.

Which is exactly what the snopes article said. Hydroplaning means your tires lose contact with the ground - but you are a mere millimeter or so above it (you don't fly into the air). Other than that simple exaggeration, it is true - cars do leave the ground (very slightly) when you do this.

Care to provide a link?

If non-subscribers could do full-text searching. There was a HUGE thread on this just a couple of weeks ago.
Maybe idNut isn't a subscriber. Maybe he couldn't find the original thread because it was named by some monkey that wants attention with a "LOOK AT ME!!!" title. If idiots would name their threads with something logical that fits the newsbite or topic, then this wouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the link, Mutilator.

EVERYBODY NEEDS TO KNOW!!!
