I've been really sick lately, but we have a huge project due at work on Monday. Since I hadn't heard anything from my co-workers, I went in to see what needed to be done. It turns out that everything was fine, so I did some paperwork and left.

It's 81° today and I noticed that I felt much better with the air conditioning off and even better with the heater on. Sweating felt good and I could take deep breaths. So I decided to drive around taking in the warm goodness. I also decided to use the cruise control, which I rarely use.

I'm behind some car going 1 mph less than I am and there's a car in the left lane going about .5 mph faster than me. I hope that the guy will speed up and pass me, but then I remembered that this is Mississippi, so they probably don't know what they're doing. I end up getting close to the car in front of me, so I hit my brakes... only they don't work.

The cruise control light blinks, my engine revs, and my car keeps going. Knowing that I only have one way out, I cut hard to the right, going on the pull-over lane and the grass, and end up flying past the car in front of me who for some reason slowed down. I try to turn off the master cruise control, but it doesn't turn off. I hit it a few more times and my car finally calms down. I pull over to assess the situation, but I can find nothing wrong with my brakes. It has to be the cruise control.

So it's safe to say that I won't be using the cruise control anymore. ;)

I've never driven a car with a cruise control system that didn't shut off when you hit the brakes. There's either something wrong with your car, or you hit the gas.

my engine revs,

Are you sure you didn't hit the gas? Wouldn't be the first time that has happened to someone.

I thought about that as it happened, but when I took my foot off of everything as I was passing the guy, the car sped back up to 75. The brake seems to have worked, but the CC didn't shut off.

Obviously my CC is broken somehow, it's not a fault of the CC design or anything.

Not only does the cruise control turn off when you hit the brakes, but even if it didn't the brakes have enough stopping power to overcome the engine. If you really did hit the brakes, you need to have somebody look at your car.

You just contradicted yourself. First you said the brakes didn't do anything, then you said they did do something. First you made it sound like your car didn't slow down, and then you said that it did slow down.

Which is it. :) If your car did respond properly to the brakes, but continued cruise control when the brakes were removed, then why did you have to fly into the pull-off lane?

Oops, you're right I did.

I hit the brakes and the car slowed down. It had to have, because otherwise I wouldn't have had enough time to avoid the guy. I was close before I hit the brake.

Maybe I hit the brake and the accelerator? Hmm, I really don't know.

Either way I scored no points today.

Don't think about it too hard, just mark it up to being sick and add it to the experience pool. ;)

Even if it doesn't the brakes override the engine. At full throttle and top speed the brakes are strong enough to drag the car to a complete stop even if you never let off the throttle. The OP is a clueless driver

Yeah, I shouldn't have gone in to work today.

Hmm, I must have hit both then.

1995 Mazda 626.

The thing is that I'm usually a very careful and anal driver. I guess driving while sick isn't a good idea.
