cruise advice

I want to take my wife on a 7 day Alaska cruise, per person occupancy is about $1200. How much additional should I expect to spend on this cruise? I doubt we would be gambling or buying anything very expensive, so just the unexpected daily charges and port visits are unnaccounted for. What has your experience been?

Where did you find an Alaskan cruise that cheap? And when are you going? During prime season I've rarely seen a respectable line going for under $4,000 a person for a 7-10 cruise. We were looking at them for a honeymoon when we originally planned a June wedding and the prices were just crazy.

You've been looking in some insane spots, then! $4,000pp will get you the penthouse on some ships!

Depends on your habits...
Do you like to drink? Do you plan on getting your wife a massage on board? Do you both like to gamble? Do you want to buy souviners on board? How many and what kind of excurisons do you plan on taking? Do you plan on eating at any speciality restaurants on board?

BTW, what line are you looking at at?

offshore excursions are pretty $$...caribbean cruise excursions (submarine rides, parasail, jeep rides, swim w/ dophins, etc) are around $80-$100 a person...at least they were back in 2004...

the secret is to really research the ports you are going to and book tours independently for a better price and less guests.

This is SO true - i've been on two cruises with my family, both times we waited til we were on the boat to book their excursions. the Privately booked excursions are not only cheaper, but they get you to the destination sooner, and less crowded, and generally are a better quality tour. Plus your tourguide wants you tipping them, not all the natives, so they're more likely to avoid all that crap 🙂

And to the OP...it all depends on the two of you. Drinks are around $5-10/ea. Gambling can add up 🙂

All the shows are free - so goto them. Souveniers are always nice too.

I think you could easily find yourself adding up to $500-1000 overtop.

This was over 3 years ago. We were looking at about an average of $3000 per person for the suites (hey, it's a honeymoon!) and at the time, plane tickets from Iowa to Alaska were over $500 a person. Figure in tips, drinks, and one or two off shore excursions and it was very close to $4000 a person.

I'm currently looking at 7 night alaska excursion on Royal Caribbean out of Seattle. No airfare as it is only a 3 hour drive from Portland.

Itinerary and prices

What date exactly? Edit to say its still really early to book and get the best rates for next summer.

alcohol + excursions + shopping + tips

On RC cruises, beers go for $3 - $5 each and mixed drinks a bit more, tips are included in the price for alcoholic beverages you purchase on the ship. However, at the end of the cruise you will be encouraged to tip for several different things. Usually, you are expected to leave a tip for your head waiter, assistant waiter, stateroom caretaker, and maybe one or two other people. They give you suggested rates, and these are per person per day (meaning if you are sharing the cabin with someone else, they may suggest a caretaker tip of $4 per day, per person for cleaning your room). Of course, you don't have to go by their guidelines, but just something to keep in mind for the end of the cruise because this can add up (assuming you don't want to completely shaft these people).
