Looks like our country has embarked on a low-carb/no-carb diet binge. Everywhere you look - newspaper, magazine, TV ads, there are countless advertisenments for low-carb foods. Not to be outdone, some mainstream restaurants are jumping on the bandwagon too. Applebees, Subway, and others, are pushing "Atkins approved" menu items.

While Atkins diet has been around for some time, seems like the big marketing push has begun only AFTER Dr. Atkins passed away. BTW, I am in no way arguing the effectivness of the diet, I am sure it has helped many people, that's not my point. The cruel irony is in the fact that Dr. Atkins is getting more credit after his death then while he was alive. Why is that?

I don't know about Dr. Atkins but the fact is, people that can't lose weight are plain stupid. They simply need to get off their asses and hit the gym. I don't about their jobs, their families, their personal stuff... If you want to achieve something, you have to work for it. Anyone (unless another medical condition exists) can lose weight by eating healthy and going to the gym 2-3 times a week. I just laugh at all those morons at BK, eating Chicken Tenders while drinking those Diet Sodas

C'mon dude, let's not start the flame war. Diet is a temporary solution, everyone knows that, but let's not attack anyone for trying to get on the right track.

I know it's hard to believe, but after you're aclimated to the taste of NutriSweet, Sweet n' Low, or Splenda, it's preferred over sugar. I can't stand to drink regular pop anymore.

Maybe I was a little too cruel, but I stand still with my point. I know some people may not like the idea of hitting the gym to lose weight, and just do Atkins, but it simply won't work forever. You have to change your life style. I know Atkins books tell you "Atkins is a lifestyle change, not a temporary thing." And I say B.S.! It's just another diet and is temporary.

And about being lazy: if they want to be lazy, then they need to look at themselves on the mirror once again and think twice about being lazy. Once I used to be chumpy as well. Had some extra weight, I hit the gym, and lost it all in a few months, never gained it back. Because I really changed my life style, I don't limit myself to anything. I eat anything I want, I just burn it off in the gym.

For example; I ate like 10 Nerds ropes yesterday (hehe) and they are like 100 calories each. So I just hit the gym today and burned it all off in 65 minutes. You have to balance things...

I don't know... I respect people trying to lose weight by going to the gym, trying to add something to their lives, but I have no respect for people believing that Atkins alone will change their body forever.

Not too hard. I use Splenda in everything I drink as well. Sugar tastes weird to me as well.

You really need to read the book. Everything you said is strongly advocated in the book. Dr. Atkins did not say eat this way and you can sit on your ass and lose weight Excersise is a critical part of Atkins. I don't know how old you are but the fact is your metabolism slows as you grow older and what took you an hour to burn off at 20 takes longer at 30. One of the reasons people don't exercise is because they are fat. Even a few pounds can make you lethargic. Once this happens it becomes harder and harder to start and stick with an exercise program. One of the benefits of Atkins is during induction you see the weight loss almost immediately. This in turn gives you confidence in your new eating style. As the pounds come off it is much easier to find motivation to exercise. Atkins is a style of eating and not a replacement for exercise. It is no less balanced than what you eat.

I personally have lost 25 pounds on Atkins. Up to a few years ago I ran 5-10 miles a day and could eat anything I wanted. My shedule changed (child, two jobs, school) and I wasn't able to dedicate the same amount of time to exercise. This combined with me getting older and maintaining the appetite of an athlete added about 30 pounds to my frame. The fact is I will never go back to the activity levels I had in my early 20s so I must compensate (I get 45 minutes four times a week now).

My diet is no less balanced than yours. Atkins does not permanently ban carbs. They are slowly added back to stop weight loss and stabilize. Once you find the level of carbs you can ingest without gaining you try to stay at that level. I generally eat lean meat and fish, salad, cheese, and quite a few different vegetables. I take a multivitamin and drink a gallon of water a day. My medical test are greatly improved and I have tons of energy. I sleep far less and wake before the alarm clock. To say it won't work forever is foolish. How is your diet/ exercise program any different than mine?

Fred: I can understand that when you get older, things get different. However my mom goes to the gym for 4 hours 3 times a week and she is 48. She lost like 16 lbs in 2 months, so although to some extent I understand your concerns, I also think it's just an addition to the excuse list.

I usually lift 3 times a week, and do cardio 6 times a week... I know I know... I am a student, have lots of free time, but even if some people did half of what I do, they will lose weight in no time...

I usually run for 45 minutes during my cardio sessions and burn around 780-800 calories, that gives me the freedom of eating anything I want, anytime I want :)

My usual diet:

- Protein shake in the morning because I lift.
- Oat Meal
- Tuna
- All vegetables
- Chicken
- brown rice
- beef
- lots of fish
- wheat bread
- yogurt & milk & cheese
- lots of chili beans :)
- and Nerd Ropes (best candy ever).
- etc (other healthy stuff).

Atkins didn't invent the low carb diet, he just brought it to the mainstream. Bodybuilders in the 60's used carbohydrate manipulation to get lean for contests. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger use to eat low carb before a contest, except for him, low carb was about 100gms a day.

There is nothing on your list I can't eat except for oatmeal and thats because it taste like sh!t. I exercise 4 times a week (i own a gyms worth of equipment) and did so before I started atkins. I'm not making excuses I would just like to know how Atkins is flawed or any less sustainable than your diet/exercise program? Does Mom still have kids at home or is she free to schedule that 4 hours anytime she pleases?

actually diet soda has 0 calories, so it can work

only problem is
diet soda tastes aweful

the average american eats 3000Cal/day. 50% above the already inflated recommended limit of 2k.
nobody has to diet nor goto the gym to lose weight, they just have to eat sensibly.

The book, the Southbeach Diet was very illuminating. It's another Low-Carb diet but it's a little more balanced I think. And he goes into a lot of the science and it makes sense.

I will give this one tip about weight. I stopped eating out for 2 months. If you stop eating out, you basically lose weight. I think it's pretty hard not to. Anyway, just something that worked for me, which is the complete opposite of that Subway diet.

In my world it was topic of conversation for over two years before he death. I tried it about 18 months ago. I lost about three notches on my belt.

His weight when he died has added controversy to his diet.

Those diets are designed for people who won't , or simply do not have time for excersise. I used to be an obese person. Trust me, it's not about what you eat, it's about how much of it, you eat. If you do not excersise, almost nothing short of starvation will help you. Fatbody's hate physical exertion, I know this, because, when I was fat, I would delay, even going to the bathroom, since, to me that was work. I still hate working out, and I've been doing it regularly for about 8 mos. What I hate about it, is having to make time, no matter what time of day it is, to go to the gym and do what is required, but I must.

<<

People need to get off of that one.! You go lay in a hospital bed and have all kinds of fluids pumped into you, and not gain weight. I understand where his wife was coming from. The poor guy was in Comma, but gaining weight from fluid buildup...so finaly the naysayers could get in for a final jab. That segment of society, who does this, is the most disgusting form of being. :|

Who the hell has time to go to the gym for four hours at a time???

At any rate, I'm 35 and I started Atkins in May of last year. I lost 45 lbs by November. From November through January (3 months) I didn't watch what I ate (although I still limited my sugar intake and ensured my portions weren't too much) and I kept up my exercise as I did for the previous year.

I ended up gaining 12 lbs in those three months. So, I'm back on the plan and I will be mindful of how many (and what kind of) carbs I intake for the rest of my life.

My point? Just because it works for you and your mom, doesn't mean it'll work for everyone. For instance, I'm sure you can think of a couple of people who can (and do) eat whatever they want, not do a lick of exercise, and still cannot gain weight.

Go to google and type splenda, it's apparently not as good for you as you may think. Also supported by two of my doctor friends.

Why do people assume that just because something isn't grown on a tree that it is inherently unsafe and unhealthy? Do you really think that Splenda is worse for you than plain cane sugar?
