CRUCIAL - PRICE DROP again, 512: PC2100 - $66.99, PC2700 - $75.99

Can someone tell me how this DDR works? Can I use any memory that runs at a clock speed at or below my FSB speed?

EDIT: I think I should be more clear. I recently purchased a P4 2.53 w/533 FSB and a MB that will also run at this speed. What is the fastes memory speed it will support? Anything upto the FSB speed?

Nice deal BTW

Welcome to the forums. 🙂

You can use faster memory, but not slower. IOW, you can use:

PC133 in a system that takes PC100
PC2700 in a system that takes PC2100

But not vice-versa.

DocEnrique
If I am not mistaken you can mix the memory as long as it is the same type. DDR will not fit in a pc66 pc100 or pc133 slot.

michaeld you are wrong.
you can use pc2100 in a pc2700 mobo, but it will slow your system down to using 133mhz for memory (266 effective) or maybe even the whole system if youre using a mobo that doesn't separate mem fsb from cpu fsb.
you can use pc66 in a pc100 system, but that will drag your whole FSB to 66mhz (didnt make mem/cpu independant back then)

PC2100/2700/3200 are all the same size 1
pc66/100/133 are all the same size 2

You can mix and match whatever speeds you want as long as its the same size as your mobo...but i wouldnt do it (ie dont put pc66 ram in a machine with pc133 -- it gives you more ram but will slow you down).

I didn't see any references to price adjustments on crucial's site.

Do they give a refund if the price goes down within 30 days of purchase? (in my case, i haven't even recieved the memory, and price has dropped some)
??

Thanks

DocEnriques original post was obviously from someone who doesn't really "know tech" (no offense to him at all). I was trying to teach him the right way.

No sh1t; you CAN USE PC2100 on a PC2700-capable mobo, but it's not going to run at it's full capabilities, now will it? Besides, running the memory and FSB out of sync is not a good idea. But you knew that already, right?

Oh, and I wasn't aware that PC2100/PC2700/PC3200 were all the "same size." Thanks.
