Crucial MX200 now on sale. DO I PULL THE TRIGGER OR NOT?!

Lot's of blood sweat and tears trying to find "the one" as some of you have seen my threads. The last one to slip away was the $79 samsung 250g evo 850. Now newegg has a sale that knocks $8 off the Crucial MX200, which seems to have slightly faster reads than the samsung at the expense of writes, bringing the grand total to $94.99 with free shipping and no tax. (amazon taxes me)

This is more than I'd like to pay, but in lieu of all the samsung issues I'm beginning to wonder if it's the best option. What do I do?

I bought a Samsung 840pro, drive died about 5 months in. I'm avoiding them from now on. Cost me 2700 to get all my data back.

With speeds a hair off of the 850s and arguably more reliability, I am looking at the same one. Bouts to pull the trigger m'self.

I knew prices were expensive for SSD recover, but I had no idea it was that expensive!

OP, while I would avoid samsung as well, whatever SSD you get, make backups.
There is no storage device out there that isn't prone to data loss. 🙁

Right now, I would get either Crucial, Intel, Toshiba/OCZ. I am not a big fan of the MX200, I like the MX100 better, but, those are not in production anymore.

You have to come to a conclusion about whether price is the most important factor to you.

If yes, there is this at $80:

If no, I'd try to estimate the chances of having an issue and the chances of a prompt and favorable RMA/warranty experience if you are one of the unlucky ones that has an issue.

"Speed" would probably be the least important factor to me.

The extent or likelihood of Samsung issues are unclear, but from anecdotes it seems that the RMA/warranty experience is typically poor to average. That alone would put me off the brand, never mind the likelihood of a problem with the drive.

If price were no object, I'd probably lean toward Intel. But I own a Crucial MX100. No problems yet, but there are known issues in Windows that seem to be more common on laptops--involving power saving modes. I have a desktop and my fingers remain crossed.

You are never going to approach certainty with all your analysis. You have to take a leap of faith, sooner or later.

Transcend SSD 370 FTW - seriously! I've purchased 4 for various builds.Zero issues, comes with great software for cloning and firmware updates, bay adapter, solid controller, no TLC to worry about, and a good price which does go on sale sometimes. It may not bench as the fastest drive out there, but who cares?! SSD's for most home users/ gamers have enough speed to do what you want them to do.

Edit:
And it's a recommended drive by Anandtech!

SSD prices are dropping like flies. No need to rush after a deal. It will be cheaper next month anyway.

$80-100 is an average price these days for a 250GB SSD. Just buy what you believe will be most reliable.

. . .

(1) As much as I'm still extremely satisfied with my 840 Pro (which is now at least $100+ less than what I paid), I discovered even then (last year) that Samsung's web-site gives you a "run-around" for tech support. I couldn't even pose a question to them, and it is impossible to find the "portal." So . . . ditto!

(2) Interesting -- that there were reports of "troubles" with the MX100 for "power-saving mode." I put one into a 2007 Gateway E-475M "executive" laptop last year. I let it sleep and hibernate. Never had a problem with it. And of course, that ancient lappie has an SATA-II controller. And -- no problem with the other one I put in a desktop when sleep and hibernate are in the mix.

Folks ask me -- I recommend Crucial's products. Maybe it was for the price. But bang for buck -- they seemed the better buy.

All the SSD makers are likely to move in the 3D NAND direction, and probably sooner than later. You could either spring for an 850 Pro now, or wait. That feature is primarily likely to affect capacity. Or -- that's my guess, anyway.

I've always only used Crucial SSD's in my home systems over the years. But just last week i bought a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB drive to upgrade my Crucial MX100 250GB.

Normally i would have upgraded to a bigger Crucial drive, but i got the Samsung for only $134.99 on a Slickdeal from Buy.com on their Ebay store.

Have to admit, it's running great with no issues here. Just wait for a great deal on either a Crucial, Samsung, or Sandisk drive and go with the best price! 🙂
