I'm very disturbed about this whole issue on memory price increase. Last October I bought a 256meg DDR stick for $31.00, and not it's gone up to $60+ !

Here is a response to the email i sent them below:

--------------------------------------------------------

Lysimachus, The Memory prices have been incredibly low for over a year. The market is beginning to tighten up, therefore prices are going up. About two years ago a 256MB of PC1333 was about $550. Prices have been very low. Memory is much like commodity, prices go up and down depending on supply or demand. I hope this helps you to understand. Thank you for your order.

support_question: Dear Crucial,

I have crucial question regarding your new memory pricing. This last October, I ordered two 256meg DDR DIMS for $31.00 each for my new Epox Motherboard system. Now the price has gone up to $61.00!!! That's almost a 100% increase in your prices! This is totally unbelievable! Here is
the direct proof of my orders:

---------------1---------------
Qty: 1

Part No: CT3272Z265
Price: $31.49
Description: 256MB, 184-pin DIMM.
Upgrade for: Upgrade for a EPoX EP-8K7A System
Line total: $31.49

Line Item Subtotal: $31.49

Approximate Tax: *
Freight Charges: $.00
Estimated Order Subtotal: $31.49

Remember, that was DDR memory, and I know it is.

Please respond ASAP and let me know why this such dramatic increase in
price.

Sincerely,

Lysimachus

Now what do you think of this? This is the first time that I have ever known in history for memory to go up in price. I've always known memory to drop in price, not increase. There has been times in the past where the Market has been tight, but never do I remember it affecting memory or other computer part prices.

I don't want to come off as scoffing at you too harshly, but...

EDO did this in the fall of 1996, SDRAM did this in the fall of 1998 and now DDR is doing it in the fall of 2001. It happens, get used to it and don't try to sensationalize it, the same free-market economics that allowed these products to be invented and produced in the first place are now placing the market value at a higher price tag than you would like - wah... Why don't they make it a government controlled commodity, hike your taxes and give it to you for "free" like paved interstates. Then you could b-tch all day about how the memory market takes so long for new "free" products to come out.

Also, back in October when you bought your 256MB sticks of memory for $31.00 I would like to know if you know how many memory makers were turning a profit on such products? Try ZERO. Let me ask you another question, would you like to be able to buy PC2700 DDR next year? Would you like the memory companies producing PC2100 to be around next year to produce the PC2700 you want to purchase? If so then how do you expect Micron and others to stay in the memory making business if they have people like you vilifying them every time they try and actually make a profit on their current product?

OMG, Micron now loses $5 per stick rather than $35, wah... Those memory producers are such a-holes, how dare they - and where is my 512MB of PC2700 for $3.00?

Seriously, I'm very disturbed too, by you and others like you.

Memory price *always* are cyclical, going down, then up, then back down. It's been that way as long as I've been buying memory, which is 7+ years.

Crucial and the other RAM e-tailers are just trying to cash in on what little Xmas buying rush they can, thinking that WinXP will cause a surge in new computer buyers. RAM prices will fall again in January.

Edit: In Spring 2000, I added 128MB of Kingston PC100 SDRAM. It cost me $150-$180 for the DIMM, and I thought that was a good deal.

A few years ago I paid $400 for 64 MB of memory. Either you are a cheap SOB or you are 13 or so years old.

Memory prices are a roller coaster ride, plain and simple. I feel some funny business has taken place to increase DDR pricing specifically but the memory companies will do what they will to stay afloat.

Nobody wants to pay double or triple the cost of something that just a couple of weeks ago cost pennies but that's the way it is with RAM. Nobody excepted the low pricing to continue for very long!

You should have stocked up when 256MB sticks of PC2100 from Crucial were selling for $27 not long ago. I know I did and I'm willing to bet a lot of others around here did, too. The writing was on the wall. Just how cheap can RAM get?

You know.. people that b!t(h like this disgust me...

EVEN if they do raise the price of ram, its still cheap. There are things in society worse than freaking ram prices increasing.

I agree with the previous statment in the thread, as Dengar quoted, "A few years ago I paid $400 for 64 MB of memory. Either you are a cheap SOB or you are 13 or so years old."

I agree totally! Half of the users in this forum are "momma's boys" that depend on someone else for their purchases, or are not even old enough for a driver's license..

And.. apparently you bought ram when it was cheap.. so why the (^(& are you disturbed? its nobodys fault but your own.. You should have bought more.
You know with the holiday season is approaching; a majority of minor hardware components are going to rise.. its a fact.. face it, or go spend your money elsewhere

Where are you getting the $60+ price from? I just priced out a stick of 256 DDR and it came out to $49.50 shipped after the (now) 15% Anandtech discount.

I'm cool with $50 I guess, but I think I'm going to try that Best Buy deal that they are having. They are selling a stick for $35 - $10 MIR. I hope the numbers are right because BB normal price right now is $59.99.

Anyway.. I don't blame anybody but myself because I could've bought 2 months ago when the prices were dirt cheap. I guess I forgot about the RAM prices when I was thinking about other hardware.

JOSEPHLB,

True, but momma's boy or not we need them to go and buy this stuff so the Semicon market itself keeps moving forward. I want a 3000+ Tbred with 4GB of PC3200 next year so I can upgrade to a clawhammer 6 months after that, but it aint gonna happen if we can't get a lotta momma's boys out there to buy up everyone's inventory between now and then. We in the DIY market benefit everytime some momma's boy buys a gateway/dell/compaq loaded with microsoft's software.

I don't know if Lysimachus is a momma's boy specifically, but I sure am glad he is doing his part and buying some micron memory (double kudos to Lysimachus, helping the economy and buying american made products!). But it is safe to say noone wants to hear people bizotching about ONLY getting 256MB of DDR-anything for the ripoff price of 60 dollars.

Heee Heee. That reminded me. In 1991 or 1992 I had an IBM 486/25MHz with 4MB RAM (Win3.1 naturally). I paid $179 to upgrade the memory to a screaming fast 8MB. If you want to whine about somethin, whine about paying $179 for 4MB of memory. Not only were the prices grotesquely higher then, but the wages people earned were a hell of a lot lower.

BTW, that cheap memory I stocked up on is still just sitting in my drawer. Pssst. Hey, kid. Come over here. Wanna touch my memory stick?

Kinda misleading topic headliner... because SDRAM prices seem to be pretty
stable.

Hello everyone. The reason I'm replying to this thread is to apologize to you all for coming across unreasonable like I did. Will you all forgive me?

Anyway, the reason I posted this was because this was the first time in my entire life that I ever heard of memory going up, so please don't get angry with me. I'm into Networking, and have been an avid computer fan for ever since 1998, and never once have I ever heard of a situation like this. This is really strange since I'm right in the middle of the information highway on technology in the PC industry. This must have been just one of the many issues that slipped by me, since I have been always told that memory always decreases in price, not increases.

FYI,

No, I am not 13yrs. old. In fact, I'm 23. But like I said, I'm sorry for not keeping up-to-date on issues like this. My bad :(

Please try to be a little understanding.

BigFatCow and BrunoPuntzJones,

Thank you very much. True, I haven't visited these forums in a few months. I better start keeping up more. I'm up-to-date on most everything else with hardware...so it seems...I just can't figure out how this one slipped by me so bad
