Release note updates:

Faster boot-up times: Improved time to ready—the sliver of time between when the power button is pressed and when the drive is ready to accept commands.

Faster TRIM: Improved the efficiency of how TRIM works on the drive.

Windows 8 certification: The new firmware is officially certified for the upcoming Windows 8 OS.

Better power management: Increased power efficiency during standby mode, which can extend battery life significantly.

Seems like people are having allot of issues with this upgrade:

http://forums.crucial.com/t5/Solid-...m4-firmware-010G-is-now-available/td-p/107936

from the pdf release notes:

Firmware Release Notes

Firmware for the m4 SSD is being updated from version 000F
to 010G.

Firmware 010G is optional for anyone currently running 000F,
as it includes incremental improvements and refinements over
these versions, but recommended if the user is experiencing
issues with the current firmware.

Firmware version 010G includes improvements which are
specific for Windows 8 and new UltraBook systems
, although
Windows 7 and other operating systems and computer
platforms may also see improvements. Any m4 firmware
version will function normally in Windows 8. However, the
following improvements were made to meet new certification
requirements for this operating system

I'll be upgrading one in a laptop from 000F. Running Win7 x64 in a Lenovo 0578-CTO, coming out of sleep mode it locks up about 50% of the time. Been troubleshooting for a while and determined it's the SSD, last ditch before an RMA.

Hmm, I got the following notice (we use Micron SSDs at work):
PCN 30742
Firmware for the RealSSD C400 and C400v is being updated from version 000F to 010G. The C400 is updatable to this new firmware starting from any previous version in a single step. All firmware improvements from previous versions are included in this update. Please see previous PCN's for details.
This update will be mandatory phase-in for new product built in Micron factories, but is an OPTIONAL update for any drive in the field or in distribution hubs. It is only recommended if the end user is experiencing an issue related to the following items.

Version 010G includes the following changes:

• Improved Trim response time
• Improved power-on-to-ready time (known as POR, or TTR for Time-to-ready)
• Improved resume-time from low power modes, and improved reliability of warm reboot
• Improved power consumption by disabling HIPM (Host Initiated Power Management)

The firmware update tools for external bootable media and for Windows 7 & 8 will be available for internet download immediately. Download requires registration on the website. Please see http://micron.com/ssdfirmware.

I updated about 55 drives today....I guess we'll find out of there are any problems 😉

what are you talking about?

Reading the Crucial forums linked by hhhd1, there are complaints about this firmware not supported for a UEFI BIOS, freezing after a while, not being detected, and needing to downgrade the firmware.

It's possible that ALL of the complaints are UEFI BIOS related, but I don't know for sure.

Got Win8, got the m4 and also got UEFI. It's a laptop with a very limited BIOS so I have no choice. I was about to download the firmware until I saw warnings that the firmware isn't for such systems.

Damn Crucial... why even bother to release this so quickly? It's storage. Don't toy around with it. Did you guys hire Ryan Peterson? J/K!!!! J/K!!!!!! It makes it a nightmare for technical support and for those lesser in the know. For those that do know they'll have to wait for a UEFI compatible version. What a tease! 🙂

It's not that the firmware doesn't support UEFI, but it appears to have some problems nonetheless.

Relevant post/explanation from a mod at the linked thread:
In response to your comments about systems using the new UEFI BIOS, we’d like to clarify some of your concerns. Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is a new BIOS architecture shipping with some systems. Our firmware code itself is compatible with systems utilizing the UEFI BIOS; if you have already successfully updated your firmware, rolling back to older versions is not necessary and not recommended.

We issued this note because we noticed instances where our update tools do not recognize the SSD with some systems using UEFI. The target device is not recognized as an updateable device during the reboot process. If this happens, the firmware update will not occur, and you’ll retain the firmware version you started with. Windows will then restart normally. If this sequence occurs, you cannot upgrade to this firmware version at this time, but please note that you’ve done no harm to your system or to your data.

We chose to make this firmware available because the vast majority of Crucial customers are not using UEFI-based systems, and we wanted to get the benefits of this upgrade out to the majority of our users. We are working on UEFI-compatible tools and expect to have them available within the next month.

We appreciate your feedback during the firmware update process, and we’ll continue to do our best to keep you informed.

It still doesn't really explain the other issues people in that thread are having through, specifically with the SSD failing to be detected on upwards of 90% of reboots, and random freezes, as well as deteriorated performance, particularly with write (random-write?) and 4k-64thread writes.

I'm happy with 000F for now, so I'll hold off on this until things get ironed out.
Nothing's wrong with my SSD right now anyway.

Holly agree. I take back the firmware not being compatible with UEFI. It's the update tool that may not detect the drive properly. Regardless since many with laptops have limited BIOS options, it's a good idea to holding off until the tool detects the drive properly for those with issues.

I'll be upgrading one in a laptop from 000F. Running Win7 x64 in a Lenovo 0578-CTO, coming out of sleep mode it locks up about 50% of the time. Been troubleshooting for a while and determined it's the SSD, last ditch before an RMA.

My update went smoothly. Let see if my lock ups are fixed. the Lenovo 0578CTO is not a uEFI based machine.

Well ran the AS SSD benchmark before installing and realized my SATA II ports somehow had changed from AHCI mode back to IDE mode and have been running about half speed for who knows how long?

Changed it back to AHCI mode without problems :whiste:

Decided to hold off on the upgrade for now.

Updated when this first came out - 2 128 gb drives in raid0. Using a 990FX Sabertooth with a UEFI bios. No issues for me so far.

I got a slight increase in my 4K writes, other than that the AS-SSD score looked mostly unchanged.

I updated while in AHCI running an eval edition of W8. The M4's were not the boot drive at the time.

Despite the warnings I did the update anyway on the UEFI Win8 laptop. I didn't expect it to actually go through. Most firmware updates give you several warnings before doing so. This one, once you tell it to reboot, it's hands off.

No surprises, other than it detected it. It's every bit as brisk as before. I saw a small improvement in single 4k read/writes on AS SSD. Everything else is 3-4% difference both fast and slow so no difference otherwise.

Recommendation for the next release... allow us to confirm the firmware update after the reboot.

Tried 010G Crucial M4 Firmware on my fresh new Clevo 170EM (don't know if it has UEFI), and it turned out to be a bad move :
- No performances improvement.
- SSD frequently refused to boot (not detected by BIOS)

Noticing on forums I wasn't the only one having boot troubles with this specific firmware, I manually flashed back to 000F, and no more boot problems.

I have an identical problem!
I bought a CTM4128SSD2 with factory 000F firmware as upgrade for my HP dv9715nr. The day I received it in the mail I check for firmware updates and there it was - the 010G already available. So I did an upgrade and installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit flawlessly... until it was time for windows update to install updates and restart... The BIOS wouldn't recognize my SSD anymore for some reason displaying "Operating system is not found" message, and at very odd times after almost banging my fists on the keyboard (not good idea I know 😀 and chaning bios settings and saving them - only then it would sometime boot into Windows! I'm glad that after hours of online research I finally bumped into this thread - I then immediately flashed the SSD back to 000F - and VOILA! MY laptop restarts normally again and boots into WIndows OK! Scr3w the new 010G update. Thanks for sharing your advice.

Guys look. You cant overclock to do tests or you might lose the drive with 010G from BIOS. Then you have to do whats called a power cycle ,,, crucial gives instructions very simple. Soo as long as your PC is workin fine and not crashing or not booting up cuz of a failed overclock then go ahead with the 010G your safe.. Im on it,, its amazing cut my boot time by 5 to 7 seconds. things feel much snappier compared to 0FFF ..... Also turn off comp and keep PSU switch on when you sleep. TRIM goes to work now,, when you turn on comp next morning youll notice its snappier,, it gets faster also firmware can make things faster... I give thumbs up with 010G .. thx,,

As mentioned in the other thread, this is still wrong.

If I understand correctly there are 2 ways to do this 1) sign out of all user accounts, let it idle. and 2) go into the bios and let the machine idle there. Is this correct?

Even though my drives are all in raid0 I haven't had to do this since I retired my Vertex 2's. GC seems to work just fine.

Yes, you need to leave it connected to power while not accessing any data, this can happen as you say, by letting it idle at bios or at login screen, or even at desktop while not doing anything.

But, when you shutdown the computer, the power is not connected anymore to the drive, and it will not do any idle time garbage collection.
