Can someone knowledgeable tell me if the crucial 4gb pc2-6400 BL2KIT25664AA80A memory sticks reliable?

From what I read, the 2x1gb pc2-8500 sticks are very unreliable. Is this true for all their chips lately or is it just the pc2-8500?

frys.com has the 4gb kit on sale today for $20AR so........ I really need to decide if im gonna go with this stuff over like corsair or ocz which are both more.

By, "I've been reading" I hope you don't mean Newegg reviews. Most of the people writing those reviews probably don't even know how to get into the BIOS on their rigs.

As far as the Crucial ram, I don't have this exact kit, but I do have 4gb of regular (not Ballistix) Crucial ram and it's some of the best (read highly overclockable) ram I've ever owned for what it's worth. Don't ever buy OCZ ram, btw. It's junk in my experience and it probably comes with a rebate which you will never ever get.

Put is this way, for $20 how can you lose?

Nah, just from paying attention and reading some stuff. Like look someone on fatwallet just replied 10 mins ago with this. Stuff like this is what worries me.

"For what it's worth I bought these when they were $30 last month. I had to call an order from fry's because the website wouldn't take it. When they arrived, one of the sticks was dead. I had to ship it to Crucial for a replacement. Their customer service was quite good, and I had a replacement several days after I returned the old ones. But I've already had 2 BSOD's...My cpu and GPU are overclocked, but it worked fine with my old memory. I've also owned the 2x1gb Crucial Ballistix, and I got BSOD's...in fact they won't even run unless I undervolt them.

I'm done with Ballistix at any price."

Really? Because I'm 0-2 with OCZ rebates and I'm very anal about how I fill out my rebates. If you don't believe me go check OCZ's own forums and see how many people are complaining. Or check Newegg reviews on OCZ products if you must. I guess we're all just talking out of our ass right ;) I'm sure you know what you're talking about, though ;)

I have right here 4 sticks of ballistix 1Gb that will not run on either the Gigabyte p35-ds3r or ds3l. These boards hang at startup will not even allow me into bios setup to try anything with ram voltage or timing so as to get them to boot. I can drop in some old Corsair xms I have around and then both boards fire up without issue.I've tried all 4 sticks together and individually 1 at a time and they all seem to be defective. These are the sticks with the part number ending in AA80A rated for 2 volts. The older 2.2 volt sticks with part number ending in AA804 was always good reliable memory and can be quickly identified by the 2 metel clips connecting each side of the heat sink across the top.
Crucial needs to recall this later memory.I did the online rma request a week ago and have yet to hear back, probably because of the holiday.

I have those sticks and they are by far the most reliable sticks of memory I've had. I've tried Corsair, Gskill and these ballistix sticks are by far the best. Running at 4-4-4-12 2T at 2.0 volts runs perfect...

Im wondering myself. Old double sided crucial ram is great, now have single sided ram and Its junk. get BSOD all the time. Need to send in for rma, but also want to upgrade to 2x2gb. I was thinking of going crucial again but not sure if they are still having problems.

also considering G-Skill and Corsair, but I dont think the corsairs OC very well, I think G-Skill are good for oc'ing. I dont mind paying a little more as long as it can oc and will be reliable. I also know Crucial and corsair are good about rebates, not sure about g-skill.

probably go with whats cheapest

I have had 2 sticks of the older model go bad. Its the version BL2KIT12864AL804. I had to RMA my 1st set after about 7 months. The new version they sent me is the BL2KIT12864AA80A. The email even said its a revised version and the voltage used is 2.0 over the 2.2 from my 1st set. I had the 1st set go bad and while I was waiting for my RMA I bought a 2nd set to use till the new arrived, it was also the older version and just went bad a few days ago. So far the new version is running fine at 900 with the timing and volts in my sig. I have read things about the older models having alot of issues, so lets hope thats the deal and this new version holds up.

Have been using Crucial in an A7M266 for 2 years and 8 years prior.
Using Ballistic in an M2N 3 years Amd Have been using Ballistic for last build intel P45Pro No issues whatsoever. 2 4GIG KITS AND 2 2 GIG KITS. PC2700 I GIG AND PC2700 512K. Have to be careful of the voltagees and latencies and also ensure that the board is supported on the crucial site. OCZ were DOA for me and would not run on my M2N

Interesting. I sold my Gigabyte P35-DS3L Rev 1.0 BIOS F9 with 2x2GB of the Crucials ending in the number OP is inquiring.

I personally tested them on this board using memtest and Prime95 for DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 2.0V and DDR2-1000 5-5-5-15 2.0V. Both of these settings passed without problems. I guess it just depends on 'luck of the draw'.
