CRT w/ DVI input = no signal (aparently)

I just picked up an IBM P260 ... 21" with both VGA and DVI inputs.

I have an ATI AIW 9700 Pro, which has a DVI output.

If I use the DVI to VGA converter and plug into the VGA connector on the monitor, it works. However, if I plug a DVI cable from the 9700 Pro to the monitor's DVI input, I get nothing.

I just wanted to see if the DVI was any better, but now I feel challenged to get it working!

Sorry that I left that out of my original message.

The monitor does have a switch. I connect the DVI, power up the computer and at no point does the monitor acknowledge that there is a signal on port 2 (the DVI port).

It almost seems that either 1) the DVI cable is defective, 2) the monitor is broken or 3) the video card doesn't output DVI

#3 seems unlikely ... if it weren't sending signal out the DVI port, then the DVI to VGA converter plug wouldn't have signal to convert, which it does.

Very strange ...

Do you have the correct type of DVI cable? you need to have a DVI-I cable the one w/ the extra 4 pins for this to work as they are what carry the analoug signial on a DVI cable a standard DVI-D cable will not work as it doesn't carry the analoug signal just the digital one. Hope this helps... :)

BINGO -- we have a winnah --- DVI-D cable is what I have.

Thanks so much ... going to look for a DVI-I cable!!!

edit: If you happen to know, is there any advantage to using a DVI-I cable to go to the DVI input on my monitor or is it just the same (or thereabouts) to use the DVI to VGA converter that I have and use standard VGA to VGA cable?

i have a p260 as well and i use the suppiled cable that has a vga connector on one end and dvi-i for the other. when running dvi out from my card it does look slightly crisper than when useing the dvi to vga converter.

Very interesting TheSnowman, thanks for the information ... I'm going on the lookout for a DVI-I cable.
