crt vs flatscreens

i have a 19" crt.. im thinking of buying a crt 21-24" or perhaps a flatscreen of some sort.. i dont know much about the flat standards.. LCD, TFT whatever.. i just wanna know if its ok nowadays to play fps games like battlefield 1942, (doom 3, halflife 2 later) on them without any problems like shadows, trailing graphics, big latency etc....
