I am in a market for a new 21"/19" CRT. Is Sony Trinitron still the king of CRT? How much difference is there between a Trinitron tube and Diamond whatever tubes offered on Samsung and such?

Sony makes the Trinitron and Mitsubishi makes the Diamontron tubes. Both are aperture grill tubes and are sold to other manufacturers for use in their branded monitors. I think both are excellent depending on the associated electronics, features, and housings offered by the manufacturers. If you buy from either Sony or Mitsubishi you'll pay more for the name than the same tube in a Samsung as an example.

My daughter's Samsung looks as good as my Mitsubishi for less money using the same tube. Sony's are even more expensive.

It depends really. What type of work are you going to do with this monitor (graphics design, etc.)?Do you need the absolute best dpi, refresh rate, etc.? Are you looking for an SVGA, XGA, SXGA, or UXGA monitor? (since you want a 19" or 21", you probably want SXGA or UXGA). What's your price range? I've seen a couple of threads you've created concerning saving energy (Distributed Computing Forum regarding SETI), how much power do you want your monitor to suck up, or is that too picky.

It all just depends really.

You will be happy with either the Trinitron or Diamondtron.
I have had Sony Trinitron and Iiyama Diamondtron based monitors and my current taste is for the Diamondtron after using both.
Its a personal thing - if u havent owned either then you be happy with either IMO, YMMV though ;)

Clarification: I just wanted to know if there's night and day difference between the tube types. JUST THE TUBES in question

I own a 21" (see sig). I looked at many different 21" monitors. I thought the Sony looked better than any others I saw, so that's what I bought. Was it "surprisingly" better? No. Besides, the difference between them could have just been tweaking some settngs.

Edit: BTW, I use a CyberPower AVR900 UPS. With my old monitor (now my wife's, a 19" Viewsonic) I'd get about 6 minutes of backup power. With the 21" Sony, I get about 10 minutes of backup power. Seems the Sony is more energy efficient. I'm not sure this is a good scientific test, but it's interesting.

Techonweb.com sells the Samsung 1200NF for $690 including shipping. $110 below budget. :)
