crt television question

sometimes when watching TV the screen goes to a small dot or a horizontal line across the centre. If I tap the top of TV the screen shows normal.

How can I fix this?

probably a cold solder or a bad cap or resistor somewhere...just get a new flat TV...I can't even get people to buy my 36" CRT HDTV ready TV for $50.

time to buy a new tv. the flyback transformers are dying and the parts and labour associated with repairing that tv is more than a new tv.

You can try vacuuming it out. Years of dust, piled up will take its toll on electronics.
Good luck

Very bad idea. DO NOT open a CRT TV. Those things can retain lethal voltage levels long after they're unplugged.

Take it to a certified TV repair shop, or just splurge on a new LCD.

Good advice. I worked in that industry for a number of years. These sets use DC supplies in the 165VDC range on the board and rarely is the board isolated, meaning if you touch one of the metal heat sinks on a board, expect to get shocked. The flyback transformer outputs up to 27,000 Volts and the CRT acts as a capacitor and can store that charge for years while the set is unplugged.

I could use one for some old PS2 "light gun" games. But I sure as hell will not attempt to move a 200+ lb tv up 3 flights of stairs!

If you don't care about new tech and another crt will suffice then just check craigslist for people wanting to unload theirs. I wouldn't be surprise to find people giving them away for free.

Does this happen on more than one input? ie coaxial cable from a cable box and the A/V inputs from a game console?

Yes, this is true. At any rate, I doubt the wife would be happy about it😉
