CRT screen expands beyond border when...

I have a Sony FW900, and whenever I open up a browser the entire screen expands a bit. Even if I don't open the browser full screen, my icons drift a bit to the edge, and if I do maximize my browser it expands so that I can barely see the minimize hash.

So naturally I set the horizontal and vertical so that everything fits, but as soon as I close my browser the screen shrinks a tiny bit and then I have annoying black space around my entire desktop.

I can live with that, BUT...

if I open up my browser maximized and it expands just a tad beyond too much, the monitor turns off like it's in sleep mode, with the little orange blinking light. Then I simply turn it off by hitting the monitor's power button and then press it again and it comes back on just fine.

Does anyone here know why it does this, and more importantly, if there's a setting somewhere that i can fiddle with to make it stop expanding and contracting when I use my browser?

Checking the video settings would be my first thought. It seems that for w/e reason, the resolution is changing. Try setting the resolution at your monitor's maximum.

Sounds like it might be dying. It doesn't seem to be able to maintain the voltage level of the steering circuits when pulling the current of a white background.

That sounds like a good call. It occurred to me that it happened a couple times elsewhere... during flashing scene switches in Bioshock Infinite.

Never had a dying CRT myself, normally when the display on any monitor (crt or LCD) flashes like that, its due to the resolution being changer by a program (game) or myself in settings.

a quick flash, yes. What he is experiencing is blooming then the monitor goes outside what it accepts as a range or cannot power it.

Perhaps bring the brightness or contrast down so it's sucking less juice maybe?

Most CRT's have adjustments on the monitor to increase and shrink the size of the visible area. You should be able to compensate with those settings.

As was said earlier, it's called blooming. It's a normal effect of an aging CRT. Time for a new display.
