I bought a SONY CPD-E540 a few months ago and returned it because the picture ws not bright enough nor was there enough contrast. I was a fan of Sony prior to that.

Replaced it with an NEC FE2111SB and have been extremely pleased with this monitor, no complaints.
With the press of one button you can switch between 3 brightness levels.

can't say for 21 inch category, but i'm an owner of a 17 and a 19". im a big fan of sony's monitors, for some reason, even over the viewsonics or other brands that use the trinitron tube technology.

NEC/Mitsubishi FP2141SB can do 1600 x 1200 at 100 Hz. At 2048 x 1536 it can do 85 Hz. No other monitor on that list can do those refresh rates at that high resolutions.

i'd go for the g520p or the superbright, spending a little extra for the best monitor is usualy a good investment.

the "E" models have less quality control.
