CRT or LCD, can't decide

Well hell! I had thought I picked out the monitor I was going to get, and then the sunday ads arrive.

I was planning on getting This LCD to go with the computer i'm ordering, since i'm kindof limited on desk space(not so much limited, as that I can't find a desk deeper than 32". But, this morning, looking through the ads, I see Best Buy has This Samsung CRT for not only less, but over $70 less. So, i'm in a rut. I've been trying to decide for the past couple of hours, and just can't pick which one, so I need some help. Like I said above, weight and size are an issue, and the CRT being less sure doesn't hurt, but i've got no real NEED for an LCD(I do 0 LANing, I just think they're sexy).

So after writing this, and reading it, I realize it looks like the CRT is the obvious choice, but I still won't be able to pick for myself. Any input or help is highly appreciated, first time builder here, and don't want to mess anything up.

PS: Oh, it'll be used 99% for gaming, but i'm not REAL sure what kindof impact that has, since I know almost nothing of LCDs.

you can get that samsung one cheaper at bestbuy it's 199$
LCD is no good for gaming FPS or anything where reflexes count. LCD screens lag very bad.

LCD technology still has a bit of growth needed. It seems that fast TFT's compromise color depth and have poor viewing angles. Slower TFT's, using different screen technology, have better color and viewing angles but are limited for fast paced action like gaming and video.

If you have the room, go for the CRT and wait for the next wave of improved TFT's.

Just my opinion.

Best Buy has had that 19" CRT Samsung 997 on sale several times the last half of this year. It's $200-$20 mir this week, the same I paid in July. A search should show you how well regarded it is on this forum. The 19" LCD Samsung 912N (I picked up this weekend at CompUSA) has a response time of 25ms is analog only (no DVI) and ghosts somewhat. (Nice "cool looking" monitor and nice large screen tho.) Supposedly DVI is more important for a LCD size larger than 17" and the LCD you're considering should be okay at 16ms response time.

If price and gaming are more important to you, I'd suggest the Samsung 997 crt.

Went and picked up the 997 Samsung CRT, it's definitely really nice - the idiots had opened it and it was upside down though, hopefully that didn't do any damage. Oh well, $20 off since it was opened, so that's cool. Thanks for the help all, appreciate it, glad I picked this up 🙂
