I think that crt monitor, can damage the eye, causing myopia. Does anyone agree ?

Also, how much refresh rate is enough ?

This is based on my limited knowledge, but I heard that anyting under 70hz can be damageing. Not sure though.

There is a vague link between close work and developing myopia. This is any close work, e.g. reading, fine manual work, computer use. CRTs are no worse than anything else.

Low refresh rates cause more eye-strain, but this in itself is not harmful.

Working close-up for long periods causes, can over time cause distortion of the lens in the eye so that it tends to focus on close objects. This is sometimes called eye-strain, but it is the same mechanism, whether you are reading a book or using a computer screen. This is the reason for the recommendation that users should sit approx 1 - 1.5 yards away from the screen.

Eye-strain that stems from low refresh rates comes from the positioning muscles of the eyes - because of the flickering, there is a tendency for the eyes to over- or undershoot their target meaning that several additional corrective movements are required.

this is a very informative post , thx

How about the radiation from a crt monitor? Does it contribute to myopia ? Is myopia simply a genetic trait ? My parents and my sister dont have myopia, yet I start to develope that ailment when i started using a copmuter:disgust:

Just a small added note about eyestrain.

It is all about focal distance. Our eyes are designed such that at rest, they are looking into the distance (parallel). In order to focus close up, we have to use muscles in our eyes to pull our vision inward. These muscles get tired after long periods of time doing anything close up.

I have heard suggestions that you should look away from your computer screen every 15 minutes to reduce eyestrain. As for radiation, I don't think CRTs omit very much.

i agree w/ SickBeast. it may sound like i'm being silly, but every 10 mins or so lean back in your chair, close your eyes, and rest for like 10 seconds (its ok, your program can wait for you :))

with that i can stay up all night w/o my eyes hurting

just my 2 cents

I ought to add a little clarification to this point:

The link between close-up work and myopia is still controversial, but evidence does exist for it - It is only convincingly demonstrated in young children (<8 years) who spend a lot of time reading, etc. There is little convincing evidence that close-work in adulthood can exaccerbate or induce myopia.
