CRT Monitor Disposal

Diamond Member
I need to be rid of my old 19" CRT monstrosity. It doesn't work so I can't give it away, unfortunately. I know they need to be recycled correctly. Any info on how to do this?

I always put them on top of the trashcan....and the garbagemen either take them or throw them in the back of the truck. I don't know which one but as long as it is gone I do not care.

Midnight/early AM stop at local business's dumpster. Best way to get rid of crap like that. Have done that many a time - where I used to live, the city would charge per bag of garbage beyond what you were allowed. So into nearby dumpsters it went.

I know I can just readily dump it and be done with it. But, my understanding is that they are loaded with dangerous and toxic materials that contaminate the landfills. Aren't there companies that specialize in recycling these dogs safely? Or am I being a tree hugger?

In california, CRT based monitors are hazardous material because of all the lead and the PCB boards inside them. They have to be disposed of properly. I know there are companies that take this equipment, but you more than likely have to pay them to take it.

i think something like about 1/3 of the weight of a monitor/tv is the lead in the CRT, not sure.

1 - Load CRT in car
2 - Drive to grocery store parking lot at 2am
3 - Unload CRT
4 - Unload handgun
5 - Move 100ft away
6 - Enjoy late night target practice!!!
7 - Leave scene as quickly as possible

You guys make me fscking sick.

Since when did it become trendy to purposefully disrespect the environment?

Idiots.

Hmm.. look up computer recycling in your local yellow pages, perhaps?

that how it works alright, rather than pollute our landfills we ship them off to china to be smashed up and dumped into rivers.

the smashing
the shipping
highly trained toner recovery engineer
state if the art waste disposal facility

if you care about the enviroment why not just leave it in one piece to be burried in a landfill

There are quite a bit of organizations that will take them and refurb them for poor school districts or even other countries (Iraq?). Also I believe in most states, monitors are considered hazardous waste and need to be disposed of accordingly.

Some of you people should be ashamed of yourselves, but all together I suppose I am not surprised.

at work we have 6 or 7 extra large crates filled with dead monitors...most of them are 21" and above too
I asked about them once, IT manager told me that all had problems, but not all were dead - they're sitting there because it's too expensive for the company to have them recycled

i think for a single monitor it will be cheap though, like 5 bucks or so

5 bucks cool, I'll check it out at my local computer shops.

Get data on what they really do with it if you're going to chuck it off to someone who claims to be recycling. More often than not, it's sent to a company that just disposes of them in a third world country. Or some just simply toss the stuff into a dumpster. So now instead of just polluting the environment, you got robbed $5 because of it too.

Yeah, because it's real cost effective to ship a 19" monitor to a 3rd world country 😛

Alright, then I'm not going to pay even more to throw something else away. Trash is trash. If I don't want want it anymore, it's trash. The environment is lucky that it's free to drop off used motor oil, otherwise most people would not pay to have it disposed of. Don't batteries say to dispose of them properly as well?

Anyways, it's always been trendy to disrespect the environment on ATOT. We hate PETA, and Greenpeace, and men who drive Miatas. It's just our way.

I've gotten rid of 2 19" CRT monitors before. I just set them out on the curb w/ the rest of the garbage. They alway seem to vanish before the rest of the trash, freakin scavengers. Both of the ones I trashed worked fine though, they just had to go.

it really is though, its cheeper to ship it off than to disassemble it, strip it, crush it, and whatnot while compling with EPA regulations
