CRT monitor as output for DVD player?

Hey there, I happen to have two CRT monitors laying around (17" and 19") and would like to use them as a display for a standalone DVD player if it's possible. However, I have the following questions. 1. Is there an adapter to take the RCA or component video to the VGA plug on the monitor? 2. How would I handle the sound - I have powered computer speakers that I could use RCA to 3.5mm plugs on if this is feasible... Has anyone successfully done this? I just don't want to spring for an additional $100 or so on a TV if I have a perfectly good monitor that would work. Thanks!

the sounds is absolutely no problem, you have that right. Just get some RCA to 3.5mm adapters and you're set to go. (you're only going to get stereo though unless you have a DVD player that outputs 5.1 via RCA or have speakers that can decode DD)

As for the monitor, I think that's going to be tricky. A comptuer monitor not only needs the 3 component signals, but also needs a vertical hold and a horizontal hold unless I'm mistaken.

I know they make adapters that go from VGA to Component (which is the oposite of what you want to do) and those cost a lot.

Ok, did a little search and I think you'd have to get something like this to get it to work. I have no idea if this is a good one, or if this is a good price, but this is the sort of thing you're going to need I think.

NeoDigits sells an upscaling dvd player that has a vga connection. It will also upscale dvd's from 480p to 1280x1024 via vga or 1080i via component.

I wonder if there are some lower-cost "VGA box" units, intended for consoles, that actually upconvert the composite or S-video source to a VGA analog output? Most of those cost under $50, I would check those out if possible.

Virtual Larry - I'm almost to the point of just saying screw it and go for the 19" TV from wally world, but seems like this would be more cheap. Any ideas? Thanks everyone for your advice!
