My precious 22" Sony CRT starting making a weird ticking sound today, I turned it off and the sound was still there, died down a bit but I can still hear it. Wondering what this is, never had a CRT make this sound.

HUMMMM it just stopped for a few seconds, then sounded like automatic sprinklers now it's ticking full speed again.

is my CRT near death or can I fix this?

My CRT years back would also making a noise similar to a tick but like a noise of a piece of plastic being let go of a forced position and stretching taught. Never had a real problem with it though. The symptoms you described are serious to warrant a new monitor.

If its making the sound even when its turned off, chances are you have a problem in the switching power supply circuit.
They are similar in design to pc power supplies, using a transformer and transistors to convert the power to the required voltages.
It could be a loose core on a transformer that is vibrating, which wouldn't be serious, just noisy. Or it could be a relay thats getting just enough current to be in the on/off state, making the sound.

Easiest way to tell is take off the cover and then plug it back in.
DON'T touch anything inside the case whether it is unplugged or not.
The CRT voltage remains high, 15K V+ even for months unplugged, that large red wire going to it :) Its connected to a flyback transformer.

If you can describe what it looks like where the sound is coming from I could tell you more.

it stopped making the noise, don't think it means it's fixed but until I hear the noise again I'll be happy assuming it's working for now :)
