So I have a so Triniton Multiscan E200. I've had it for about 5 years and just now it's started to whine on occasion. I did it search and found a thread, and people said it happens, and someone had it with their sony multiscan too. What I want to know is if the monitor is going to die soon, kind of like when a HDD starts clicking alot. If there anything I can do other then soldering caps (I don't really know alot the about insides of CRT monitors, and I don't want to mess something up) or hitting it constantly? I don't really want to change the refresh rate/resolution as anything higher or lower than 10x7 seems too big or too small. The refresh rate is at 85 Hz and anything lower and I see some annoying flickering. If there is nothing I can do, could someone recommend a good LCD ($200-$350) which will primeraly be used for gaming, so an 8ms and under response time is a must. Preferably 17" and a resolution of 1280x1024. any help will be greatly appreciated.

No, not much you can do. But I am not sure this is a sign that your monitor is dieing. Perhaps malfunctioning... Anyway, I have a ViewSonic PF790 that will whine depending on the resolution and refresh rate. What I would do to get rid of it, was change the refresh rate or the resolution, or both. That is the best solution that I can give you.

Also, I have worked with hundreds of monitors and quite of few of them have whined at a certain resolution and refresh rate. Annoying? Yes! But not much you can do.

I can't help you with your current CRT monitor, but I do have a good recommendation for LCD monitor:

If you want 17", get the Samsung SyncMaster 730B with 8ms response time. I have it and it's great. In gaming, I see no ghosting, blurring, or anything like that. Of course, you could wait for a short while for the Samsung SyncMaster 730BF, which is the exact same thing as the 730B, except that it has a 4ms response time. This may or may not be available in North America yet, but you should look for it. These monitors can go for $250-$300 if you shop around.

Alternatively, you can get these same monitors in 19" size, except with the model numbers 930B and 930BF, respectively. These ones are about $350-$400 is you shop around.

All of these monitors have 1280 x 1024 resolution.

Usually, it does mean that the CRT will die soon. Make sure it's on a surge protector and try other refresh rates like ArchAngel said, because sometimes it's only specific frequences that cause the noise.

Mine used to make a sound that's probably similar to what you're getting. It actually went away after a while, maybe a few months or something, I'm not really certain anymore.

My CRT (NEC Multisync - 19") was also making a faint high pitched noice (sounded sorta like a mouse). I read somewhere that changing the "tilt" up, down, or sideways can correct the issue. Had something to do with magnetic fields or something.

Anyway...I changed the tilt of the monitor (slightly) and it stopped making the noise and has worked fine ever since (happened about 9 months ago).
