CRT/LCD: More strenuous to the eyes?

if i am just looking at "type", i prefer a LCD ...

for everything else . . . a CRT does it for me . . . 85hz generally being the minimum refresh for me - for hours of extended gaming sessions or desktop.

even 80hz extended and i get headaches and eyestrain . . .

and i can see flicker @75hz . . . . i have tested many monitors.

really hard to vote 😛
[x] "view results" 😉

What lighting conditions do you people use your monitors in? LCDs look okay in the daytime to me (not any worse than CRTs, anyway), but in the dark I find that most LCDs make my eyes sore after a hour or so at a stretch while I can stare at my CRT all night with no problems.

Dude, you've got to post links if you're going to say stuff like that?

Not according to this guy:

But the added ingredient of heavy computer use, while long debated as a possible risk factor for short sight, has not been studied for glaucoma, according to David Wright, chief executive of the International Glaucoma Association (IGA), who said the researchers "have provided a fascinating study that needs to be followed up".

From 11/16/04- not that long ago.

Yeah, I asked my ophthalmologist about this once a few years ago and he said that neither type of display has any long term effect on your eyes.

Assuming the CRT had a 100htz refresh rate, (or even 85) the LCD would look worse. The contrast on LCD's is a joke.

i think eyestrain, the CRT is a little worse. but it all depends on what your used to. i've had CRT's mu whole life, my samsung 19" 997MB syncmaster is running at 85 hertz right now and i can still see flickering at times. but then i game alot and im trained in noticing fast stuff 😛 it also doesnt bother me one bit. however, if i look at a LCD my eyes hurt quite a bit more.

as for buying one of the 2, eyestrain really doesnt matter. most CRTs can handle high refreshrates these days and everybody goes for LCD's anyways, because they take up less space and the flatness looks better. to me, its insanity since i'd much much rather have a clearer image (0.2 dot pitch FTW) that save space on my desk for something pretty i wont be looking at most of the time anyway (i dont think you'll work much looking at the monitor instead of the screen.)

so since everybody's eyes are different, as are preferences, i guess its a tie mostly.

Having an LCD & CRT side by side via dual monitor,I would have to go with the overbright LCD, it's like staring into a flourecent lightbulb after awhile and the poor black levels are pretty annoying. CRTs never bothered me when running higher refresh rates.
