CRT just died...

a couple of days ago i turned my computer on and the crt was acting very weird, like hissing really bad and the on/off button didn't work. i unplugged and this solved the problem, i thought.

this morning, same thing but unplugging it had no effect and the d@mn thing will not work.

this crt was only build in 03 and is a viewsonice a90f+. i left it on all the time, even when the computer was off and it would go into sleep mode with the little led going from green to amber.

is this normal? i have had other crts last me 10yrs, or was this one just a bad apple? seems weird that it went out so quickly as image quality was still very good.

i never ran it out of spec, always 1280x1024 @75Hz

yeah, i have a 99 sony trinitron that is just like new. also, my bro has a refurbed one from 98 that works perfectly too. guess you are just unlucky.

🙁 what is weird is i have this little viewsonic one (14") that i bet was made in the early 90s still plugging along. damn thing gets hotter than hell but still works....

I'd have to completely disagree with that. Viewsonic makes excellent monitors. Both CRT and LCD.

Bob, it should still be under warranty. Viewsonic CRT's come with a 3-yr factory warranty, but just shipping it to them is going to cost you. 2 yrs is definitley way too quick for any monitor to die, even if the display was on 24/7.

i just went out and picked up a samsung 730b lcd 😀

less power, less heat

Well I should've rephrased it. Viewsonic is good but just not in the same league as Sony, NEC, Eizo or even Samsung, at least for CRTs.

Ok, for CRT's I can agree with that.

Bob, how do you like the LCD? I'm really itching to trade in my 19" CRT for a 19" LCD myself.

personally, i love it and i have only had it for about 8hrs. i had read some reviews about this particular one and some people said it was not the best, and at $330-$80R i can agree as far as price is concerned as there are many cheaper and many much higher. imo, the picture quality is equal to my old crt or basically any crt i have seen. if i have a long webpage up, and scroll down as fast as possible, there is no ghosting, it looks just like a crt. i had to adjust the settings a bit for contrast and brightness, but other than i really like it. i can see a ghosting effect on my t42 ibm laptop, which is something i did not want for a desktop display.

there is a button that you can click that scrolls through presets for movies, sports, games, text, internet, etc and that is really nice.

even though i am just using the vga connection, text quality is equal to or possibly better than what my crt was.

i went with the 17" because the 17 and 19" lcds are the same resolution, meaning that the 19" will have a larger "dot pitch"(not sure if that is what is called on lcds) and am glad i did.

i think i read somewhere that this thing draws ~35W max, which is nice compared to the old crt.

i played bf2 for a bit and really liked it, ultra clear and no ghosting, but i will only play it at 1280x1024, other resolutions may not look as good.

if i had this put in front of me and not able to see what it actually was (just the image and not if it was a crt or lcd), i would swear it was a high quality crt.

and this is coming from a guy who was going to go out today and buy another crt, but my wife actually talked me into a lcd (imagine that) even though she has her own machine and does not use mine at all, i just always liked crts...

if there are any lcd test that are software, let me know and i will run it through its paces...
