CRT discoloration...

Have an NEC FE1250 21' CRT that has recently become discolored on the left side and a little on the bottom. Can this be fixed? and or is it worth it to get it fixed?

If it's indeed dying, don't bother with a repair. Invest your money in a 19 inch LCD, prices are coming down rather nicely on these. The viewing area is roughly identical to your 21 incher.

If the FE1250 is like their newer models, there should be some color uniformity settings labelled "Globalsync" in the OSD menu. Those might let you correct this problem.

Mine had the same thing. When I bought it from Azatek. It was a green spot in the lower left corner of the screen. You can fix it by downloading NaviSet off NEC's website...best piece of software since....well....NaviSet!

Did I mention it's FREE!?!?

Also, make sure there are no magnets near the CRT. I had a CRT TV I thought was going bad once, with discoloration near a corner. However the problem was that an item with a magnet was near enough to the TV to effect it.

Had this monster on two separate computers, no magnets near the screen and yet it still shows discoloration on one of the 4 corners and a little on bottom. The monitor doesnt even register as an FE1250, even when the drivers are installed for that monitor. So it may be time for the junk heap for this old tube. Shame cause its so damned big and it was awesome for gaming and such.

Thanks for all the replies!

That can probably be adjusted out, do you have landing controls in the monitor's menu?

NEC's NaViSet looks like it can do it as well, but you can almost certainly do it just via the monitor's control panel.

Like the other guys mentioned, it's probably fixable with Navisoft or if not that then the hard buttons on the bottom of the monitor. I have a NEC 22" that is very similar to yours and I've played with the settings to create the kind of discoloration you're describing. Some NEC monitors refer to it as Global sync.....refers to the magnetic field of the earth interfering with electrical field in the CRT.

I actually returned two Dell LCDs in favor of the NEC CRT. I love 'em.
