"Crouching Firewire, Hidden Usefulness"

If I would like Firware capability in new MB is it simply a matter of buying a PCI Fireware add-in card ?

What brand would be good, from personal experience? Thanks...

Yes, you can add a PCI Firewire card, or a Creative Audigy soundcard.

Just don't expect great Linux support unless you scrutinize the chipset used by the Firewire card...

Oops...that's how cool I am, I guess...posted reply with no content...duh...sorry, just got home from work, it's 11:20 pm... thanks for comments guys...

Well, I figure if you come up with an interesting/offbeat thread title, it tends to get more "looks" than the typical"HELP PlEASE"... !!!

Andy...about the Audigy sound card comment...I did know it has a 1394 port...but I believe I read somewhere it doesn't put out much "juice" to power FW peripherals...is that possible?

Thanks for input...

The firewire port on the Audigy can't power devices requiring more than...2W I think? It wasn't much in any event....The thing is, what are you planning on hooking up to the firewire port? If it's a video camera, CD/DVD, hard drive, or any other self powered device then you don't need to worry about the firewire port being able to provide enough power.

The OEM Audigy with 1394 port is a pretty good deal. 🙂

That's what I thought too...Most FW cards, esp the combo cards with USB 2.0 ports also seem to be @ $65. to $$90.

If we get digital camcorder, would be nice to have 1394 port...also with new piece of software out very soon you can use the Apple iPod MP3 player with the PC platform...that iPod is very COOL, (but expensive-ouch-plus I love that TV ad for it where the guy is dancing thru his apartment...my wife says that's me...)
