How often are you able to complete crossword puzzles without outside consultation (NYTimes of course, Washington Post acceptable if you must)?

For me:
Monday: ~100%
Tuesday: ~100%
Wednesday: ~100%
Thursday: ~95% (there have been two I haven't been able to complete)
Friday: ~95% (again, two)
Saturday: 80%
Sunday: 98%

Rarely. I like them, but my verbal skills are lacking and I never wasted my time memorizing the name of the Tang dynasty rulers in year 700 China.

Now if they ever came out with a Scrabble version of crossword puzzles (ie no proper names), I'd do much better and they be much more fun.

I'm getting better. I couldn't tell you about the NY Times...I only do the local papers when I get them. It takes a while to get used to the kinds of answers they're looking for.

Agreed.. once you do a lot of them you see that many names are used over and over and you just learn them

not to mention the quirky syntax of the clues....
