Crossover trouble

I am trying to connect two computers using a crossover cable. But it isn't working, both using XP Pro. Some one please walk me through each step. Thanx

1. Buy crossover cable.

2. Plug into both NICs.

3. Uh, there is no step 3.

Perhaps you could be more explicit about what's going wrong? Do the computers see the network connection? Do you get green lights on the NICs? Does IPX work but not TCP/IP?
